TALAG Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004
Giannini Foundation Library, 248 Giannini Hall
Present: Paul Atwood, Lily Castillo-Speed, Susan Garbarino, Ruth Girill,
Ron Heckart, Terry Huwe, Dan Krummes (recorder), Waverly Lowell, Margaret
Phillips (Guest), Maryly Snow, Kathleen Vanden Heuvel and Linda
Vida.
1. Minutes of Oct. 6
approved.
2. Electronic Resources
Finder (ERF) discussion.
M. Phillips met with TALAG members to discuss ERF. Rather than
present an overview of the ERF project, she focused on answering specific
questions posed by TALAG members. During the course of discussion
she noted that ERF is aimed at a broader user audience than simply
librarians. In response to concerns that requested changes
submitted by individual TALAG members had not yet been implemented,
Margaret noted that there had been some e-mail communication problems
recently and urged members to resubmit change requests to her. She
also noted that turnaround time for substantive change requests to ERF
initiated by TALAG members should be about seven days.
3. Announcements:
a) L.
Vida, S. Garbarino and W. Lowell will meet with ADMIRE members on Dec. 7,
from 2:00-3:00 in 303 Doe. In addition to describing TALAG’s
mission, they will also discuss the TALAG request for re-wording of
Pathfinder descriptions found on a variety of Library web locations and
handouts (see below)
b) L.
Vida announced that she has learned officially that the e-Links project
to connect to Gladis/Pathfinder in addition to Melvyl that was
initiated by CDL will not be implemented and has died.
c) P.
Atwood announced that David Duer will discuss The Library’s current
fund-raising efforts at the Nov. 16 Affiliated Libraries Fall
Assembly.
d) L.
Vida announced that the joint Water Resources Center Archives / Institute
of Transportation Studies Library 2005 calendar has been
published.
e) D.
Krummes briefly discussed the possibility of the Affiliated Libraries
jointly producing a calendar for the year 2006 or 2007 which would focus
on Affiliated activities / collections and could be used in outreach
activities.
f) T.
Huwe discussed the planned Nov. 4 LAUC Statewide Assembly at UC
Berkeley. He also discussed the recently released report
"Systemwide Strategic Directions for Libraries and Scholarly
Information" currently located at
http://libraries.universityofcalifornia.edu/planning/.
A discussion regarding the report and its possible implications for
Affiliated Libraries followed.
4. Suggested language
for The Library’s Melvyl/Pathfinder leaflets
R. Heckart and D. Krummes reported back on their attempt to provide
concise, straight forward language to describe the complex relationships
of Affiliated library holdings to Gladis/Pathfinder and Melvyl as
presented in leaflets produced by The Library. (They additionally
noted that misleading descriptions of Pathfinder as “UC Berkeley’s online
catalog” occurred in an unknown number of Library and UC Berkeley web
locations as well). Suggested leaflet language was discussed; and
K. Vanden Heuvel and Ginny Irving’s suggested language was adopted by
consensus:
What is
Melvyl?
Melvyl is the library catalog that includes all UC Berkeley Libraries and
all campuses of the University of California. It also includes
other research collections such as the California State Library, Graduate
Theological Union, and more. It contains records for books,
journals, videos, maps, sound recordings, scores, online resources,
etc.
What is
Gladis?
Pathfinder is the web-based catalog that includes many, but not all, UC
Berkeley libraries <then link to a List of libraries not included in
Pathfinder>. Pathfinder features keyword and boolean searching,
clickable links, emailing of citations.
ACTION: L. Vida will discuss suggested leaflet language with Isabel
Stirling. W. Lowell will present suggested leaflet language at an
upcoming WAG meeting. L. Vida, S. Garbarino and W. Lowell will
present suggested leaflet language to ADMIRE members. [There were
additional suggestions via email that TALAG also address standardizing
all web-based references to Gladis & Melvyl as well.]
5. WAG
developments
S. Garbarino’s temporary assignment to WAG has ended. W. Lowell
will assume the responsibilities of Affiliated representative to WAG at
its next regularly scheduled meeting.
6. NRLF Affiliated
libraries storage quotas update
L. Vida reported on this continuing issue. K. Vanden Heuvel noted
that no action on storage quotas will evidently take place until after
the project consolidation of the NRLF and SRLF boards takes
effect.
7. Librarian Principal
Investigator status.
W. Lowell reported on her unsuccessful attempt to secure PI status.
It is believed that the official list of librarians eligible for PI
status has not been drawn up and finalized. A troubling potential
restriction of librarian PI status was reported and its implications for
Affiliated librarians was discussed.
ACTION: L. Castillo-Speed will discuss the librarian PI status with Chris
Tarr and possibly with the University Librarian.
8. Next meeting:
Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, 8:30-10:00 at the IGS Library.
