Workshops for Non-UCB Clientele.
Benefits and limits
In addition to benefiting the organization for which it is performed,
consulting work by members of The Library both expands a staff member's
skill and experience, and reflects favorably on The Library and the
University. In performing consulting work, Library staff should take care
that such work doesn't detract from performing their duties to the
Library.
Individual reimbursement
A staff member may engage in consulting work for which he or she is reimbursed. Such work should be performed on vacation leave, or in exceptional cases, on leave without pay. The customary procedures with regard to approval of vacation leave or leave without pay should be observed.
At request of outside organizations
When an outside organization requests consultative or training from the Library, and when this work is also considered by the supervisor and AUL/Director to be beneficial to The Library, such work may be performed and considered as part of the regular working schedule of the staff member(s) involved. Customrary procedures with regard to requests for leave with pay should be followed.
For other state agencies
Consulting work for other state agencies may be performed on a release time basis. Approval should be obtained from the supervisor before acceptance of the consulting assignment.
Fees to The Library for services
In some cases, The Library will negotiate a reimbursement fee from the state agency or outside organization which has requested consultation or training services. The revenue can be used for library staff training and development; to compensate a unit for the loss of the consulting staff member's time, or be disbursed according to other criteria. Checks should be made payable to "UC Regents" and should be given to the unit providing the service. The unit should send the payment to the Library Business Office along with a memo explaining what the payment was for, and indicating to which fund the payment should be credited. The amount will appear on the unit's monthly business report as income.
