Staff Development Tours and LecturesThe Staff Development Committee arranges and sponsors staff tours to museums, libraries, and other venues of archival and conservation interest. SDC tours and presentations support career development and exploration by offering information on educational opportunities, exposure to the varied library-related work of local organizations, and the chance to meet with our colleagues in the community. Recent Tours: 2008 CALIFORNIA STATE ARCHIVES & CALIFORNIA MUSEUM FOR HISTORY, WOMEN AND THE ARTS Forty-six Library staff members traveled to Sacramento on January 15, 2008 to visit the California State Archives and the California Museum for History, Women and the Arts. The day afforded staff the opportunity to delve into the history of California and learn from another institution that archives Western Americana. In the middle of the day, attendees met with Nancy Zimmelman Lenoil, the State Archivist, who spoke about current issues in archiving. Highlights from the archives and museum include a 19th century mug book from San Quentin State Prison and exhibits on pioneers' quilts, William Randolph Hearst and his home in San Simeon, and Japanese internment.
2007 CALIFORNIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY On October 30, 2007, a group of 25 Library staff visited the California Historical Society and Past Tents exhibit in San Francisco. Staff toured the vaults, viewing sample items from the historical society's interesting collections, including materials from the Peoples Temple in Jonestown, Guyana, photographs of San Francisco taken after the 1906 earthquake, and San Joaquin County's criminal records from 1902. The group also learned about the research area of the historical society where many people come to use the collections. In the second hour of the event, Susan Snyder, head of Access Services for The Bancroft Library, and Tanya Hollis, Archivist/Manuscripts Librarian for the California Historical Society and a former Bancroft employee, introduced the Past Tents exhibit they curated. Based on the book of the same name, the exhibit chronicles the history of camping in the American West.
2006 DE YOUNG MUSEUM On May 19, 2006, a group of 40 Library staff attended docent-led tours through the newly renovated de Young Museum in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. The group was introduced to each of the collection areas and encouraged to spend more time in an area of particular interest. For many it was their first visit to the museum and they took the opportunity to observe the view from the tower, overlooking much of Golden Gate Park and surrounding neighborhoods.
PACIFIC FILM ARCHIVE AND FILM STUDY CENTER On January 20, 2006 and then again on February 3, 2006, 20 Library staff toured the Pacific Film Archive and Film Study Center in the UC Berkeley Art Museum. Nancy Goldman demonstrated the web catalog researchers use to identify films for screening and to look at the collections in greater depth. We previewed a documentary on the preservation of film and the challenges with restoring this outdated medium in the digital age. 2005 BIOSCIENCES LIBRARY On December 2, 2005, Norma Kobzina provided 15 Library staff members with an inside look at the Biosciences Library in Valley Life Sciences Building. Staff learned about the collections, the physical space, and the history behind many of the treasures in its holdings—including the 65 million year old triceratops skull in the lobby and a rare cookbook of celebrities’ favorite dishes.
THE NORTHERN REGIONAL LIBRARY FACILITY On November 17, 2005, Ty Johnson took a group of about 40 Library staff to visit the Northern Regional Library Facility (NRLF) at Richmond Field Station. It is there that much of the University of California’s infrequently used library holdings are stored and shared by the Berkeley, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Merced and Davis campuses. | ||||||||
