How To Connect Using your Home PC
Dial-up Connection using Your Modem
This option is the simplest, but offers "command line" access only to
Infocal, Library and Home IP information services. AS OF JUNE 4, 1996 ALL
USERS WILL BE REQUIRED TO ESTABLISH A HOME IP ACCOUNT TO ACCESS ALL OTHER
INTERNET SERVICES (see below).
Setting Up a Campus Home IP Account
DO THIS FIRST to establish your own Home IP connection through the Campus,
and then load the Berkeley Internet Kit (BIK) on your home Mac or PC to
run Netscape, Telnet sessions, FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and other
Internet utilities from your home.
Obtaining the Berkeley Internet Kit (BIK) for Mac
or Windows PCs
Once you've established your Campus Home IP account, load the BIK: a
complete, easy-to-use bundle of software for your home PC including TCP/IP
connection, modem dialer, Netscape, Telnet and FTP utilities.
Connecting to Berkeley & the World Wide Web
using a Commercial ISP
Perhaps the best way to get access to the Internet and World Wide Web
today is to bypass the Campus's overloaded pool of slow (only 14.4k baud)
modems, and shell out the fairly low monthly fee to connect via a local
commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP). The "Netcom" company offers a
special deal to UC Berkeley students, faculty and staff.
