NOTE: Campus security guidelines now require ALL computers to have firewall software installed!
The UC Berkeley campus has a site license for the new Symantec Client Security software. For simplicity's sake we can also refer to this as "Symantec Firewall." We will firewall ALL Library staff PCs using this Symantec Firewall software. Symantec Firewall SUPERSEDES our current NORTON ANTIVIRUS software,as it contains the Norton AntiVirus component we're already familiar with, plus adds a Firewall component to keep our PCs safe from hackers, spyware, adware, worms and other Internet hazards. The Symantec Firewall is designed to close open ports on your Windows PC to make it "invisible" to potential attackers.
The process is pretty simple: you can consider the Symantec Firewall an "upgrade" to Norton AntiVirus, as it comes from the same company (Symantec owns Norton). YOU WILL SIMPLY INSTALL THE SYMANTEC FIREWALL RIGHT OVER YOUR EXISTING NORTON ANTIVIRUS; there is no need to "uninstall" your old Norton AV beforehand--it will be uninstalled automatically during the Symantec Firewall installation!
IMPORTANT: Please note that there are two sections below: #1, "Installation" and #2, "Configuration." You MUST run step 2,Configuration, IMMEDIATELY after completing step 1, or you will lose network functions! Follow the below steps carefully, and print them out and refer to them if necessary.
1. INSTALLATION - To install Symantec Firewall, begin by downloading the install file in the following link:
Download the Symantec Firewall install file
Save the Symantec Firewall install file (called "scs_client-3.1.6-mr6-win.exe") to your download folder on your hard drive at the "Save as. . ." window. Note: If you don't have a download folder, now would be a good time to make one. It's best to download stuff to your "D" drive, so your download folder should be located there (i.e., "D:\download").
After you complete the download, run the Symantec Firewall installer by double-clicking on its icon in your download folder: ![]()
During the installation, you'll be asked to simply click "Next" and then "Install" to move through successive screens. The first is a scary-looking"Warning" notification to remove any anti-virus or firewall products from other vendors, or "consumer" editions of Norton. But don't be intimidated--since we have previously used Norton's "Corporate" edition, this doesn't apply to us--we can simply click "Next":

Just click on the default "Next" and "Install" buttons when prompted, including when asked to confirm the Destination Folder (C:\Program Files\SymantecClient Security), which is fine:

You'll see on-screen windows notifying you that earlier versions of Norton AntiVirus are being automatically removed, and that Symantec Firewall is being configured. One final click on "Next" at the "Live Update" screen and the install should begin its final phase, as the latest updates to the Symantec Firewall and AntiVirus components are downloaded:

Click "Finish" to complete the updates (wait a moment while they are installed), and then "Next" at the "Completed" screen:

At the end of the installation the program will ask you if you want to reboot the computer. Go ahead and click "Finish" to restart the computer:

After your reboot, you will see the new Symantec Firewall icon that looks like a "green globe" along with the familiar "golden shield" AntiVirusicon in the task bar next to the time display:
.
Firewall Notification "Popups" - When you first begin to use your PC to access the Internet after installing the Symantec Firewall (when you use your Web browser, for example), you'll be presented with "pop-ups"asking you if you want to permit the connection. In most cases, you can"permit" the connection in question if you know it's something you normally do--like use your Web browser. In most cases, just accept the "recommended" setting, as this usually simply allows normal Windows networking functionsto operate:

AntiVirus Settings - As before, you can double-click on the "goldenshield" AntiVirus icon on your Windows task bar to set configuration options, and to update your virus definititions manually by simply clicking on the"Live Update" button. "Live Update" will automatically download the latestvirus definitions from the Symantec AntiVirus Internet site, as well as periodic updates to the Symantec Firewall via your PC's network connection. It is highly recommended that you set your AntiVirus "File," "Schedule Updates" menu setting to "Enable Automatic Updates DAILY," since new viruses appear all the time!

2. CONFIGURATION - IMPORTANT: After installing the Symantec Firewall, you need to configure it! Don't worry, it's easy as A, B, C --just download, unzip & import the settings file:
A. Clickhere to Download the Firewall Settings file
B. Unzip the Firewall Settings file:
The Firewall Settings file is in "Zip" compressed format, so it will look like this: "D:\download\Firewall Settings.zip":

YOU MUST UNZIP THE FILE before you import it into Symantec Firewall.Simply double-click on the file to open the WinZip utility (which is pre-loadedon all Library staff PCs). Highlight the Firewall Settings file and select"Extract" from the menu:

This will extract the Firewall Settings file to your D:\download folder:

Your un-zipped file looks like this: "D:\download\Firewall Settings.xml":

C. Import the Firewall Settings file: Double-click yourSymantec Firewall "green globe" icon in the Windows "tray" area next to your clock: ![]()
The Symantec Client Firewall settings Window will appear:

Click on "Options" then on the "Settings Manager" tab:

Click on the "Import Settings" button and navigate to your "D:\Download"folder so you see your Firewall Settings file:

Double-Click on your "Firewall Settings.xml" file and click "Yes" inthe dialog box when asked "Proceed?" and click "Yes" again at the "ImportSettings" dialog box when asked "Are you sure [etc.]?":

You will see a progress indicator, and then a dialog box reading,"The settings were restored successfully." Go ahead and click "OK" at this point and you're done!!! Close your Symantec Client Firewall menu ...and enjoy more secure computing. YOU ARE NOW FIREWALLED!!!
