Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about configuring the Symantec Firewall:
1. "After installing the Symantec Firewall software, I can no longer connect to OCLC [or access my network drives/can't print, etc.]."
As you probably know by now, the firewall software requires input from you, the user, to make a decision to "allow" or "block" any Windows applications that attempt to access the network. This is especially true right after you first install the Symantec Firewall software, as it will launch pop-up dialog windows asking you whether you wish to "allow" or "block" specific applications as you use them for the first time. For most of these, you should choose "always allow," as these are usually routine Windows functions like network printing. (And please, if asked, always "allow" a program called EZscan.exe as LWNS/Systems uses it to access your computer for maintenance!)
If you've installed the firewall software and then find yourself immediately unable to use applications you accessed previously, it's often due to the fact that you inadvertently clicked "OK" when asked to by default to "always block" this application by one of Symantec's pop-up dialog windows.
To fix this, you can simply re-import a fresh
copy of the Firewall Settings file. This will restore your settings
to a usable, "back to square one" starting point, where you can then CAREFULLY
answer the pop-up Symantec
Firewall dialog boxes once again as they appear. Pay careful attention
when you're asked to either "allow" or "block" connections, and choose
correctly! (NOTE: You do NOT have to completely re-install the entire Symantec
Firewall software application! Re-importing the Firewall Settings file
should fix things in most cases!)
To re-import the Firewall Settings file, please follow Step #2 ("Configuration") on the following page of Web firewall instructions:

(Note: as an alternative to re-importing a fresh copy of the Firewall
Settings file and starting over, you may also change each application setting
individually without having to "go back to square one." To do this, Double-click
on the Symantec Firewall "green globe" icon in your Windows "tray" area--in
the lower right-hand corner of your screen, next to the clock. Click on
"Client Firewall" then "Configure." Choose the "Programs" tab, then after
a few seconds a list will appear at the bottom under "Manual Program Control."
You then just select the application that you inadvertently blocked and
choose "Modify." Make the correct choice and click OK, then OK again. You're
Done!)
2. "After installing the Symantec Firewall software, I'm totally unable to access some Web pages."
Some Library staff have run into a problem accessing certain Websites after installing Symantec Firewall together with the Google Toolbar. Sometimes access is being blocked by the Google Toolbar's "pop-up blocker," and simply turning off the Google pop-up blocker will fix it. To do this, just click on the "# blocked" item on the Google Toolbar to toggle it to "allow pop-ups" at that Web site, and sometimes this will allow you to access that page.
3. "After installing the Symantec Firewall software, I can no longer see images on certain Web pages."
In some cases, you can open Websites, but some of the "adware/referer" portions of the screen have little boxes with X's on them. Symantec's "Ad Blocker" may be blocking this info (technically called "referer information") from showing up. Here are instructions from Symantec's site on how to fix this:
How to pass referer information through Symantec Client Firewall 7.x
Situation: You want to allow Symantec Client Firewall to pass referer information when you visit a Web page.
Solution:
When you click a link on a Web page, your browser notes the current
page that you are on and sends that information to the server of the new
Web page. Thus the server for the new Web page knows the last Web page
that you viewed. Symantec Client Firewall has a default rule set, which
blocks referer information. However, some Web pages require this information
before they allow you to view the page. You can configure Symantec Client
Firewall to pass referer information to all Web pages or to a specific
Web page.
Note: In the following procedures, if you configure all sites to receive referer information, you need not configure specific sites to do so. (If most Web pages work fine and you only have a problem with one specific site, you may want to use the "specific site" instructions following the "all sites" instructions below. That way, your firewall will still effectively block annoying ad scripts from other sites.)
To allow all sites to receive referer information
* Start Symantec Client Firewall.
* Click Privacy Control, or click Ad Blocking.
* Click Configure.
* Click Advanced.
* On the Global Settings tab, at the top of the
list in the left frame, click (Defaults).
* In the "Information about your browser" section,
click Permit.
* In the "Information about visited sites" section,
click Permit.
* Click OK until the Options window closes.
To allow a specific site to receive referer information
* Start Symantec Client Firewall.
* Click Privacy Control, or click Ad Blocking.
* Click Configure.
* Click Advanced.
* Click Add Site.
* In the new site/domain box, type the
name of the site that should receive the referer information,
* Click OK.
* That site name appears in the left frame
of the Advanced window.
* Click the name of the new site.
* On the Global Settings tab, in the "Information
about your browser" section, uncheck Use default settings.
* Click Permit.
* In the "Information about visited sites"
section, uncheck Use default settings.
* Click Permit.
* Click OK until the Options window closes.
4. "After installing the Symantec Firewall software, I can no longer access a locally shared printer or folder."
To fix this, simply double-click the Symantec "green globe" icon in your Windows "tray" area (lower right-hand corner of your screen, next to the clock) and click on "Client Firewall," then "Configure," "Networking," and then "Add" to add the IP address of computers you wish to PERMIT access to your machine "Individually."
You may have to remove and reattach to the printer or share afterwards.
