Free Speech Movement Cafe Programs Committee Meeting of August 3, 2006

1:00-2:30pm

FSM Café Patio

Present: Erica Nordmeir, Erika Lindensmith, Vanessa Tait, Joey Nicholson, Mike Rancer, Monica Singh (Recorder)

1. Member introductions

2. Committee charge - to facilitate primarily student initiated "activism" related programs at FSM Café. Committee publicizes venue availability to student groups, faculty, research institutes, and campus community and invites proposals. We select proposals to present and provide logistics and publicity for events.

3. Constitution Day event brainstorming/planning (mid-September) - as a condition for receiving library funding, Library is mandated to provide Constitution-related event/display during Constitution Week every September. We may have to initiate a program ourselves unless we can get a suitable proposal from the campus community soon enough to present by mid-September.

Some ideas are to put out a call for proposals to various campus institutes, departments and groups - War Crimes Institute, Law School, Poli Sci Departments were mentioned as possible sources for programs. IGS is putting on a program on post 9/11 security on September 11 and we may be able to piggyback a suitable program for FSM from the presenters.

4. Calapalooza planning - ( Thursday, 8/24 from 11-3 this year) - E. Nordmeir and E. Lindensmith are going to put together a flyer to hand out to student groups at this event. We will circulate and talk to students and groups about our public forum for their events.

5. Logistics - Appendix G - this describes how we do everything from publicity to café coordination to archiving programs.

6. This coming year we would like to re-design the flyer and advertisement for the programs. We can market forum availability and programs through bookmarks and/or flyers at library ref and circ desks. Also re-write the manual as things change - there is outdated information in the manual http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/news_events/fsmprograms/fsmfinal.pdf - there is a FSMEP Committee website which needs to be updated with new information and there is a FSM Café Programs website http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/news_events/fsmprograms/ - we don't know who updates this but Monica will get more information about keeping this updated from Nick Robinson, our past chair. Joey Nicholson will keep our websites current.

7. Miscellaneous - none of us at the meeting know how to work with A/V materials - we are hoping to get Nick Robinson to give us a group training so we can all pitch in as needed.. We will communicate through the FSMEP wiki - Monica will send details next week.

8. Next meeting to be scheduled during Orientation week and to be held in 303 Doe.
