Minutes of FSM Educational Programs Committee
Tuesday October 4, 2005 1:00-2:30pm
Room 119 Moses Hall
Present: G. Boal(recorder), L.Cushing, M.Rancer,
N. Robinson (chair), J. Ronningen, M.Singh.

1. Chair's Report
Folding chairs came with rolling cart. Sequestered in storage closet 3rd
floor of Moffitt.
ACTION: Nick has the key and will show everyone the location at the
setup of the next program.

Student Services Representative: Carla Stanley is meeting with her staff
this week and will get back to Nick with a candidate to replace her on
the committee.

A student attending the Marriage Equality program expressed interest in
joining the committee. Another suggestion was to make an announcement to
the Professors and students as it might connect with a student project.

ACTION :Nick to contact student volunteer to see if she is still
interested in serving on the committee. If not to ask if anyone is
interested at the next program.

2. Program Planning
Follow-up on last program. Good turnout. The right type of program for
the space. The timing was good as it was during Constitution week. Next
year's committee will probably be contacted for scheduling a relevant
program during the week.
Daily Cal coverage. Not enough vegetarian sandwiches.

ACTIONS: Lincoln to send signed release forms from last program to Nick
to file.
Nick to order more vegetarian sandwiches at next program

Committed Programs:
11th October – Campaign to End the Death Penalty, Voices From Death Row.
Set up time at 5.pm. No film set up needed or blocking out of light.
Committee members requested that Tuesdays be avoided, if possible, in
the future.

CEDP to get $500 stipend for speaker honorarium and partial travel
expenses. Library Business Office facilitates payment.

18th October Program – Students Organizing for Justice in the America’s,
The Shift to China
Gillian to do publicity
Lisa, Gillian, Jim, Lincoln to help Nick set up.

3. Proposals
a Nov 18th ISSC Black Against Empire - Nick proposed acceptance
- all agreed.
One advantage was it was proposed long enough time ahead.
Action : Nick will get back to them to see if they are
interested in another day.

b Bears for UNICEF Children Underground proposed for Oct 21, 28 or Nov
19, possibly reschedule for December

4. Letters of Interest
a Arab Student Union - wait to see the written proposal

b UCB Labor Coalition speaker - has other venue in the Library
that is more appropriate.

c Program Speech in Nepal - Oct 13th or 14th - Not enough lead
time. Nick to suggest that they resubmit next
year.

5. Discussion of Opposing views, balance, advocacy in programs
Suggestion that the expression of diverse points of view can
be accomplished by the open forum. The Question and Answer
part of the program allows for discussion and dialogue -
ensure that there is adequate amount of time set aside for
discussion.
Might need to review the program description online

6. Publicity and Marketing
a Lincoln to take on re-design of flyer by next January.
There is a budget for designing fliers. Lincoln to look
into other ways to publicize in the Cafe.

7. Website, archiving
Lincoln to post the digital sound files and update the
Website after programs - archiving materials link to PDF file
of flier, link to any publicity e.g Daily Cal or Berkeleyan

Future meetings will be arranged by email.
