Present: N. Robinson (chair), J. Ronningen, M.Singh (recorder), L.
Cushing, D. Duer
1. Member Introductions
2. Status of student, student services and faculty members. Former
faculty member, Joan Bieder, is on sabbatical, but will return in
January and intends to “keep in touch” during her sabbatical. The
committee would like to add faculty and graduate student members with a
deep interest and commitment to furthering the educational mission of
FSM Educational program. Nominations should be sent to the group
reflector. NR is asking ASUC to nominate students.
3. Committee charge review. We report to M. Rancer. FSM Café donor
stipulated that there be educational programs of broad social
relevance/concern at the café. There is a good budget for putting on
appropriate programs. We provide support to student, faculty, librarian,
or any UC group that wants to put on an appropriate program. Stipends
are available, as are equipment and assistance with finessing a program
to have it be successful. Events are catered. AV is available. Lincoln
and Nick are the 2 volunteers for AV logistics. Other volunteers for
program liaison, publicity, café coordination, archives will be decided
when programs are selected. Nick gave us copies of Appendix G that
details the functions of each volunteer position.
4. General business – email reflector, recording and posting minutes.
Email reflector is fsmep@library.berkeley.edu – all committee members
are on this list. Meetings recorders will rotate. Draft minutes are to
be sent to all people present at the meeting. Final minutes will go to
Nick, who will post them to the web archive.
5. Carry business forward from last year:
a. Folding chairs – 36 folding chairs and a dolly to store them have
been ordered. A storage space is available.
b. Publicity display in café – a more prominent sign is needed in the
café. The one we have now no longer attracts attention. The text/design
and location need to be revisited and redesigned. David has talked to
Graphics about this and it is feasible. Lincoln suggested that we try
marketing techniques and will look into sandwich
toothpicks/napkins/coffee holders as possible ad spaces for programs.
c. Food after program – typically, all the catered food gets eaten
immediately by the first rush of program attendees. Those arriving on
time end up getting no food. We will work with trying to arrange program
timing so that food is available after the program also. Café is closed
and available to us from 5 to 9pm for programs.
d. Window coverings – the west windows let in too much light at certain
times of year making it difficult to see video presentations. Window
coverings are not available so we will continue to make-do by hanging a
tarp or brown papering windows when darkness is needed.
e. Photos – we want to photograph events. Several of us have digital
cameras for this.
f. Survey attendees – to find out how they found out about the event,
events they’d like to see, are they interested in talking to anyone on
the committee etc. Since these events as moderated by one of us, we will
ask the audience directly face-to-face as the event comes to a close
rather than asking them to fill out a survey. Sort of like, Raise hands
if you found out about this event through the café poster, etc.
6. Overview of the year ahead:
g. a. Outreach and publicity to student groups – Nick distributed FAQs
and Talking Points for us to get in touch with student groups to solicit
proposals. Mass mailings to student groups are not well received.
Lincoln suggested arranging for media attention/buzz for programs –
these would also act as good marketing for future proposals and
programs. Something for us to consider. Calapalooza this week will have
Jim and Nick targeting student groups with publicity about the program.
Sept. 17 is Constitution Day and the University is mandated to do
something to celebrate this. Christina Maslach is soliciting student
group proposals on this topic, Nick is contacting them to let them know
that the FSM Café is available to them for putting on their program.
When we contact students groups individually, we should let the
committee know who we are contacting to avoid reduplication of effort -
Nick is targeting some public health student groups, possibilities for
others are McNears scholars, etc. Lincoln is going to put together a
proposal for the committee – this program would deal with social
movement documentarians and their relationship with institutions. A
display about one such documentarian (H.K. Yuen) work has just been put
up in the FSM Café today. A collections of Yuen’s work has just been
received by the Ethnic Studies and Bancroft library. Jim is going to
contact SIMS students to pursue a program on speech restrictions due to
copyright laws in cyberspace.
7. Future meetings will be arranged by email.
Meeting adjourned at 2:45pm.
