1. Introductions
Beth Sibley, Research, Reference and Collections, introduced herself as
the incoming chair. She thanked outgoing chair Kathleen Gallagher for all
her hard work on the committee. We welcomed returning members, Joan
Bieder, School of Journalism, Brendan Furey, Bancroft/ROHO, Patty
Iannuzzi, AUL for Doe/Moffitt Libraries, Steve Mendoza, Research,
Reference and Collections, Margaret Philips, Electronic Resources
Librarian, Cara Stanley, Student Learning Center, Lisa Walker,
Multicultural Student Development and our new member Nick Robinson,
Institute of Governmental Studies Library. Our student representatives
could not make the meeting, Amy Cucinella, Law School (returning graduate
student representative), and Ben Narodick, ASUC Senator (newly appointed
undergraduate representative).
2. Welcome and review of Committee Charge - Patty Iannuzzi
Patty gave us an overview of the FSMEP program and her role as advisor to
the program. Having an educational program is part of the gift that
created the FSM Café. This is our chance to work with campus colleagues
to encourage student learning external to the curriculum. We are here to
outreach to student groups to encourage and support student activism. We
are the "staff" for student projects. We support and guide students from
their ideas through proposals to implementation. Patty reminds us that we
have a budget for new equipment, stipends, and honoraria to speakers.
Also, we can consider scheduling events for any night since the café is
regularly scheduled to be open on Friday nights, so a closure has the same
effect whichever night we pick. Patty reminds us that the program is not
just about the FSM, it is about social activism conducted in at socially
responsible way, thinking about other views where discourse is protected
in a supportive environment.
3. FSM 40th Anniversary events - David Duer
David discussed upcoming events planned in observance of the 40th
anniversary of the Free Speech Movement, noting several areas where the
FSMEP could be involved with complimentary programming. The ASUC is
sponsoring events the week of the anniversary. There is a possible visit
by Robby Cohen, co-author with the late Reginald Zelnik of The Free Speech
Movement, reflections on Berkeley in the 1960s. We could highlight the
FSM Archives. The FSM documentary film, Berkeley in the Sixties, could be
played in the FSM Café.
4. General business
We discussed the cost effectiveness of using ETS for audiovisual equipment
vs. purchasing and maintaining equipment of our own. Patty will confer
with Kathleen about last year’s costs. Brendan suggested submitting
videotapes of events to UCTV for broadcast. There may be grants that
support production costs.
5. Outreach and publicity
Beth led discussion on various means of outreach and publicity. Patty
mentioned a contact in L&S who may have access to undergraduate email
lists. We will be discussing target groups and further means of outreach
at our next meeting.
Beth received an inquiry from the Environmental Coalition. We'll be
encouraging them to develop their proposal, speakers and format. Joan
suggested a couple of journalism projects that could be developed into FSM
programs. The presidential election could also provide a basis for future
programs.
