FSM Cafe Educational Programs Committee
May 8, 2002
Minutes

Present: Lincoln Cushing, Dave Duer, Joan Gatten, Brian Quigley (chair,
recorder).

1. Free Press Event

Discussion centered on the success of this event. Attendance was
approximately 100. What led to this success? Was it the publicity, the
topic or the panelists? Committee members liked that a reminder was sent to
allusers about the event. It was suggested that a reminder be sent to
allusers the day before all events.

Action: Add the allusers reminder email to the list of tasks of the
Publicity Coordinator on the checklist.

Action: Add posting events to "Exhibits & Events" webpage (contact Lisa
Weber, webman@library.berkeley.edu) and the "Current & Past Events" section
of the FSM Educational Programs Committee webpage (contact Gail Ford,
gford@library.berkeley.edu) to the list of tasks of the Publicity
Coordinator on the checklist.

2. Committee Composition for Next Year

Rubens) are scheduled to continue next year. Dave Duer expressed an
interest in remaining active with the committee as a representative of the
Library Development Office. Is this sufficient for continuity? Committee
members agreed that it was, since former committee members would still be
available for consultation. Brian noted that though the undergraduate and
graduate representatives to the committee are scheduled to continue next
year, we are not sure if they will.

Action: Brian will contact the undergraduate and graduate representatives
to see if they plan to continue their appointments next year.

One faculty member (Joan Bieder, Journalism) has volunteered to join the
committee next year. To complete the committee, we still need 1 faculty
member, 1 undergraduate
student (if current rep does not continue), 1 graduate student (if current
rep does not continue) and at least 3 library staff.

Action: Brian will discuss with Patty the recruitment of and transition to
next year's committee.

3. Suggestions for Next Year

- We need better signage outside the Cafe as events approach. Suggestions
include a banner above the Cafe entrance or an easel with a poster at the
entrance. We recommend that next year's committee continue to investigate
this.

- We feel that the red flyers about the FSM forums could be more
informative. They should also include contact information
(fsm-info@library.berkeley.edu). We recommend the flyer be revised to be
more informative, to make it clear that those proposing events also plan
the events and to add the contact information.

- The checklist should be revised and finalized. Instructions for
performing tasks, along with contact information, should be included in the
checklist. It was suggested that space be added for deadlines on each task.
We recommend that next year's committee finalize the checklist and use it
for every event.

- The committee should have a web presence intended for the public. It was
suggested that this web presence include information on the FSM Cafe
Educational Programs Series (including its purpose),
highlights/descriptions from past events, links to audio recordings of past
events, schedule of upcoming events, an interactive form for submitting
proposals and an interactive form for submitting email addresses to our
mailing list. We recommend that next year's committee work on a website.

- The committee should establish personal contacts with reporters from the
Daily Cal and other outlets to insure event announcements and to obtain
better coverage of events.

- Fall program possibilities:
- FSM Archives (contact: Lisa Rubens)
- Labor & Wages (possible contacts: CUE, UPTE, ACORN, EBASE)
- Disabled rights (possible contact: Sue Schweik)
- Open mike political poetry event including a featured poet
(contact:Eve Campaigne,
who was the featured poet at the fsmep take back the night event, is
interested in hosting for an open mike poetry
evening:eveningstar777@hotmail.com)
- History of People's Park
