Present: Lincoln Cushing, Joan Gatten (recorder), Brian Quigley (chair), Lisa
Rubens, Stephanie Sadre-Orafai.
Absent: David Duer, Sara Sled, Vanessa Tait, Barrie Thorne.
1. Introduction of New Members:
New members were welcomed:
Lisa Rubens (FSM Archives oral historian, Library Regional Oral History
Office), Stephanie Sadre-Orafai (Library Assistant, Anthopology Library),
and Lincoln Cushing (Electronic Outreach Librarian), Institute of Industrial
Relations).
Brian and Joan briefed new members on the history and mandate of the
committee, and answered new members' questions. They were also referred to
the FSM Education Program Committee website (which is linked to the
Library homepage/Staff).
Membership status: The committee is still recruiting for a second faculty
member and a graduate student representative. Brian has contacted the ASUC
President and VP, and Graduate Assembly. Our committee members are also
free to invite graduate students to join. Regarding the status of a
faculty member search,
the Academic Senate Library Committee has been contacted by library
administration for assistance in the search.
2. Review of Submitted Proposal
A program proposal was submitted by Xochitl Perales in behalf of the Peace
Studies Student Association:
"Justice not Vengeance": A forum to discuss the events of September 11,
with issues ranging from US foreign policy to the potential for a
modern-day McCarthyism to develop; the possible curtailment of our civil
liberties and the issue of our government's suggestion of a reevaluation of
our Constitution. Speakers are to be drawn from a list of UC professors
who are expert in these areas. Some have already expressed interest.
The proposal was reviewed and discussed, and the consensus was that the
proposal sounds appropriate and timely for the series. We do want more
information about speakers.
The proposal is recommended for approval pending confirmation by absent
members. Brian will contact Xochitl Perales about our decision.
3. Scheduling of Proposal:
Potential dates for the forum were suggested: Friday Oct. 19, 26, or on
into November. Nov. 9 is not available.
4. Selection of liaison(s) for approved proposal(s)
The program liaison may or may not be the person who invited the group with
the proposal. The program liaison will assist with logistics and budget
questions. There may also be a publicity liaison. Committee members will
volunteer as liaison. However, the main work for the event will be done by
the proposal group.
5. Publicity
Past publicity efforts were reviewed with new members. Originally we put
out a call for ideas and issues which was linked to the Library home page,
from which we received many suggestions for programs. The call for
proposals was then sent to campus e-mail lists, flyers were distributed ,
and the call was put on the web. However, that advertising didn't generate
proposals. Thus, members are doing outreach, selecting topics from the
list of suggestions, and inviting campus groups to submit proposals.
Proposals can be submitted by student groups preferably, but also by staff.
We are beginning to receive responses. Once a proposal is accepted, the
committee's publicity coordinator or another committee member will work as
a publicity liaison with the program coordinator for that proposal.
Other possibilities for publicity were suggested - the Daily Cal, ASUC
mailboxes in Eschelman, and a sign in the FSM Café announcing the call for
proposals for public forums. Lisa will follow up on her suggestion of a
Café sign.
