Free Speech Movement Educational Programs Committee
March 21, 2001
Minutes

Present: Brian Quigley (co-chair), Dave Duer (recorder), David Hollinger,
Barrie Thorne.

1. Spring Program

D. Duer reported on contact with graduate student in the School of
Journalism who may be interested in helping organize a session. However,
with such limited time remaining this term, it was decided to solicit any
proposals from student groups for the fall.

The FSM Café manager was contacted and agreed to facilitate any April or
May programs by closing the café if necessary or by remaining open during
programs.

The idea of the student-organized Multi-Cultural Faire in late April
providing possible programs for the spring was discussed. It was decided
that the Faire will probably be as comprehensive as possible, so adding
another program for the FSM Café would be duplicative. It would only be a
good idea if the café program addition were unique.

The "Daily Cal/Horowitz article" topic for the initial program was
discussed. It was decided that while the topic is certainly appropriate,
the specific incident as the focus of the first program may be too
distracting and override the purpose of our first program. It could be
part of a later program this fall or next spring. However, D. Hollinger
also noted that programs of this type put us in a position of constantly
defending free speech, rather than offering students a venue for exercising
their free speech on an issue.

The web-site generated topic ideas were reviewed again. It was decided
that Sue Schweik's topic of assisted suicide would be an excellent choice
for the fall. B. Thorne will contact Prof. Schweik to discuss.

A simple solution to presenting a spring kick-off program was suggested for
showing the video "Berkeley in the 60's" on April 27 in the evening in the
café. Information will be available at the screening to encourage groups
to apply for committee support for fall programs. B. Quigley will discuss
publicity for this event with V. Tait.

2. Call for Proposals

The latest draft of the "Call for Proposals" from S. Condon was reviewed
with changes suggested. B. Quigley will forward ideas to S. Condon.

3. No future meeting was scheduled at this time.
