FSM Educational Programs Committee

3-4 PM, Room 303 Doe Library

1. Approval of minutes- in the future the minutes will be
emailed and the committee will have one week to submit
changes, then the minutes will be archived. The minutes
can be archived by sending them to Brian.

2. Approval of agenda

3. Membership-
-No response from graduate assembly, S. Condon will call
President
-Other student members (grad. or undergrad)- there is room
for them on the committee if they are interested, if they
are, invite them to the next meeting

4. Review of call for submissions list
-Comments on interesting submissions (from list), #2, 4, 6,
7, 11, 13, 20, 22, 24

5. Spring Program- Are we doing one?
-Con- not a lot of time, calendar ends May 8th
-Pro- big response just from web page.
-Decided to create call for proposals, with ideas generated
in the call for submissions, distribute for use for next
years’ programs, and put on our own program in April.
-Date of program, probably 4/6, 4/20 or 4/27, B. Quigley
checking date with manager
-Idea- What is the meaning of Free Speech, esp. in relation
to recent Daily Cal controversy? Frame as “should
/newspaper advertisements be censored” or the differences
between “free speech and paid for speech”
-Have Daily Cal organize program? No
-Have school of journalism organize program? D. Duer
talking to Tom Leonard, Dean of School of Journalism
-Identify group before next meeting

6. Review of Draft of Call for Proposals
-To be distributed approx. same time as first program
-Also have library format, create printed mailing to
faculty, downloadable version on website
-Some revisions, edits, in progress
-Expand to include other forms of presentation,
performances, art, things that stimulate/engage audience
-Mention that limited funding exists but is recommended
to be shared
-Role of committee/ library in publicity
-Set a “recommended/encouraged” deadline for submission
of proposals

7. Alternative Program- S. Condon is planning a
Multicultural/Diversity week April 23-26, could possibly
create a program from this for evening of 27th
