Minutes
Free Speech Movement Educational Programs Committee
February 9, 2001

Present: Patty Iannuzzi (facilitator), Sarah Condon, Dave Duer, Joan
Gatten, David Hollinger, Brian Quigley (recorder), Vanessa Tait, Barrie Thorne

1. Review Manual and Charge

P. Iannuzzi introduced the committee charge and reviewed the manual
produced by the Free Speech Movement Educational Programs task force. She
informed the committee that educational programs are required as a
condition of the donation that funded the Café. The committee will
solicit, review and schedule programs for the Café, then arrange the
infrastructure for them; program sponsors will develop and organize the
actual programs with guidance from the committee as needed.

P. Iannuzzi stated that the committee should strive for balanced programs
while trying not to censor or confine program sponsors. Debates, panels,
speakers and forums were suggested as possible program formats. The
committee seemed to prefer the idea of student-driven proposals, but
planned to solicit proposals based on committee-driven ideas if necessary
(especially to kickstart the program).

2. Chairs and Publicity Coordinator

The committee discussed having a student as chair, but decided to
complement the student chair with a chair from the library. B. Quigley and
S. Condon were chosen as co-chairs. J. Gatten and V. Tait discussed the
possibility of publicity co-coordinators. After the meeting, V. Tait
accepted sole responsibility for this assignment.

3. First Steps in Program Planning

The committee debated the proper approach for generating proposals and
decided on a 2-step process. The committee decided to have a "call for
ideas" first, asking simply for controversial issues that students would
like to see discussed. The committee hopes to send this call to listservs
for various student organizations on campus, and also hopes to link to it
from the Library home page. Second, the committee will review these ideas
and use them to invite program proposals or as examples in a formal "call
for proposals." Initial work was begun on wording for the "call for
ideas," to be completed via email.

4. Action Items

- Send the donor's list of program ideas to the committee (P. Iannuzzi)
- Compose first draft of "call for ideas" and send to committee for review
(V. Tait)
- Add S. Condon to committee reflector (V. Tait)
- Contact committee to schedule next meeting (J. Gatten)
- Send "call for ideas" to identified listservs (as yet unassigned) and
link from Library home page (V. Tait)

5. Tentative Agenda

- "Call for ideas" distribution and review
- Compose formal "call for proposals"
- Decide whether to solicit program for April

Next meeting: Wednesday, February 21st, 3 pm in 303 Doe
