John Thomas announces that the University has admitted a number of students from New Orleans who
may need to be directed to the Cal ID Office and the Privileges desk in order to receive a SID
and setup their patron file.
Norah Foster announces that the Graduate Services branch has a new Data Lab open to students
Undergraduates will need to attend an instruction session on how to use the data sets before
they can use the lab.
4. Update on the Privacy discussion regarding Professor copies of reserve items
Brian Light follows up on a previous discussion concerning the issue of course reserve materials
owned by faculty members. Brian clarified the fact that once a professor hands over a personal copy
of an item for a course reserve, all normal library policies apply, including the Librarys
responsibility to confidentiality with regard to a borrowers transactions. This does mean that in the
case of a personal copy that is not returned, the Library is responsible for the billing and replacement
of the item to the professor. –Bruce asked if it would still be appropriate to advise the professorto
make an announcement in class to urge whoever has the book to return it. The group agreed that this
would be appropriatd. –Norah noted that she also puts tattle-tape in personal copies and keeps them
behind the desk to ensure their security. Charlotte Rubens notes that not revealing the identity of
patron is in accordance with both state law and ALA policy.
5. Library Safety Discussion
Presentation by Officer Garrett including many handouts with helpful information about campus security
(more available on the web at: http://police.berkeley.edu/).
Key Points:
–Calling from a cellular phone in an emergency: Calling 9-1-1 from a cell phone connects you to the CHP,
who may have a slower response time than your local PD. Cell Phone Emergency #’s: BPD 510-981-5911;
UCPD 510-642-3333.
–Blue light emergency phones: Lighted, and equipped with cameras and a direct line to the
UC police department. Locations shown on any campus map.
–Reporting a crime: Think about how you may react if you witness or fall victim to a crime.
Make security a priority over convenience. Be prepared to contact police immediately and give a
detailed description of the suspect (pay attention to any distinctive attributes) and events that occurred.
Do not go after suspect.
The presentation concludes with Q & A.
6. & 7. The last two agenda items are postponed until the next meeting.
