1. B Hurley announced that after meeting with the Library Academic
Senate, loan periods in MAIN & (Periodicals/News/Micro) would be reduced.
Publicity and details regarding the reduced loan periods would be
forthcoming.

2. SYSTEMS OFFICE REPORT

A. In March, thanks to the watchful eyes of staff in PHYS & MAIN, many
minor bugs in the CARS program were corrected. Users requesting BILL,
FINE or BIND were sometimes going into the CHARGE screen. This was fixed.
Programming changes were also made that allow the SET BILL ALL command to
work like SET CIRC ALL.

B. Holding Edit fixed: A bug was fixed involving holdings edit or items
charged to RFR (replacements). Also changed: Holdings edit program
changed to give message "*1RESTORED - RSRV/CRC: when deletion of a barcode
is blocked. Formerly, the message was :*1RESTORED - RSRV REC". The
reserve record is the other case where someone in holdings edit cannot see
a hidden record. The new version blocks the replacement of a barcode if a
hidden circ record of any of the following types is present: outstanding
CARS charge, reserve prep notice needed, fine at discharge needed or bill
cancellation needed.:

C. MANUAL BILL, FINE AND BIND are now a reality.

D. Default semester for Reserves has been changed from Spring 96 to Summer 96.

E. B Shirman noted an overdue notice for PROMPTCAT. Penny explained to
check shelf for item. Then call Armanda Barone in Ser/Cat for
instructions.

F. EAL commented on items checked out to staff for internal processing
being billed on CARS. Staff should use unit IDs and not personal IDs for
internal processing.

3. NRLF Migration to GLADIS. Discussion with Rick Beaubien (LSO)and Scott
Miller (NRLF)

A. A Command that allows a hold to be placed without a recall will not be
implemented as part of the NRLF migration. Instead, NRLF will use *nX to
mark charged items which are needed for internal processing purposes when
they are returned by the current borrower.

B. Re: items without UCB Barcodes. The specifications propose that Circ
staff and NRLF staff be able to reference NRLF barcodes in circulation
transactions. The circulation transactions will actually be recorded,
however, against the corresponding UCB barcodes. When an item has an NRLF
barcode but no UCB barcode, the system will assign a "TEMP" style UCB
barcode to the item, and use this when recording any circulation
transactions.

C. EAL asked about records in NRLF without GLADIS records. The systems
office is working to refine matching algorithms to try to insure that NRLF
records being migrated to GLADIS find and merge with their corresponding
GLADIS records as often as possible. In some cases, no matching GLADIS
records will exist; and in others, the necessary match points may not be
available.

D. There are 3 NRLF Circulation categories: Limited, Restricted and
Unrestricted. These circulation categories determine to whom NRLF may
circulate an NRLF item. In general Limited and Restricted circulation
items only circulate to their owning units. Unrestricted items may
circulate to or through any unit that uses NRLF. The GLADIS circulation
code determines how long an item circulates to each category of borrower;
but does not control to whom NRLF may circulate the item. Units may set
the circulation codes of their restricted and limited circulation items as
they wish; regardless of the circulation code setting. NRLF will only
circulate these items to/through the owning unit unless requested to do
otherwise by the owning unit.

4. UC-Wide Circulation Meeting (U C CircHeads)

N Brailo reported on the meeting of UC CircHeads that she attended with M
McDonald at UCSB during Spring Break. Issues discussed included panic
buttons, student pay rates, and classification levels for circulation
staff. Minutes of this meeting have been sent out on the Circheads
reflector. If anyone would like a copy of the meeting minutes please
contact Rick Love or Nensi Brailo.

The group plans on meeting annually, with the next meeting to be held here
at Berkeley.

5. Progress report on the New Circulation Services Manual

M McDonald reported that the working group which was set up to compile the
new Circulation Services Manual held its first meeting. The group is
devoting its time primarily to realizing this manual on the Library Web
site. The initial complete revision of this manual is expected to take
about one year. The Circ Manual Working Group also requested that this
ongoing process of documentation be a preeminent agenda item on the Circ
Services Group meetings for the foreseeable future.

6. Security Buttons at Public Service Desks

In light of the recent incident in the Music Library, J Catalano brought
up the need for security buttons at branch circulation service desks,
expecially for weekend and evening staff. Doe Library already has
security buttons in its new stack areas to be used by patrons and staff if
needed. The committee agreed that the installation of the security
buttons would be a good idea. Bernie suggested that in order to start
movement on this issue for the upcoming fiscal year the committee should
submit a formal budget request to the Library Security Council. J
Catalano agreed to draft a budget request for the installation of security
buttons in the branches. Thank you Joe!!!!!

Next Meeting, Tuesday June 18th 10:30-Noon. Curtis M. Brown, Recorder.
Location to be announced!
