1. Announcements
On April 29, Tom Leonard, Mike Rancer, and Beth Dupuis attended the Executive Campus Planning Committee (ECPC) meeting chaired by Vice-Provost Catherine Koshland. ECPC reviewed the proposal to develop preliminary plans for programmatic renovations of Moffitt Library and authorized the next step in the process to conduct a feasibility analysis for the Moffitt project. Beth will also serve on a campus committee to coordinate planning efforts related to Lower Sproul, Hearst Gym, and Moffitt Library.
Dave Duer distributed copies of the Library’s newest publication “Celebrating Learning”, which is the creation of Damaris Moore (Library Development) and Mary Scott (Library Graphics). This edition features a broad range of the subject specialties within the University Library and contains colorful photographs of the various library environments across the UC Berkeley system.
During the week of September 14-20, the campus will kick-off the capital campaign on Memorial Glade. Activities include a Music Festival and Picnic on the Glade on Sunday, September 14. The Library will host author Michael Chabon for the Story Hour reading on Thursday, September 18, in conjunction with University Relations events that day in the Morrison Library.
A proposal has been presented to the Chancellor’s Office for a memorial plaque honoring Anne Lipow to be placed in the vicinity of the FSM Café and the newspaper kiosks in front of Moffitt Library.
University Librarian Tom Leonard spoke to the Oakmont community in Santa Rosa recently. He received a Peanuts cartoon appropriate for a future library publication.
2. Recruiting for CDL head (T.Leonard)
Finalists for the position of executive director of the California Digital Library (CDL) include three highly qualified candidates from the Getty Research Institute, Emory University, and the British Library. The search was conducted by an executive recruiting firm, and system-wide university librarians participated extensively in the interview process.
3. Technical Service Review update (L.Leighton)
The Library’s Technical Services Review was submitted in October 2006, and the report’s recommendations were implemented in March 2007. On the first anniversary of its implementation, six of the seven new positions have been filled. The head of acquisition position is still vacant after an unsuccessful search. The acquisition job description has been re-written and will be posted soon.
New workflows have been successfully implemented. Programming is in place for automatically adding records to GLADIS for the electronic materials catalogued by the Shared Cataloging Project (SCP). This is a vast improvement over the earlier situation where staff had to manually add records to the database. It was noted that SCP funding has been cut by $48,000, and the system-wide Heads of Technical Services (HOTS) group is deciding how to allocate those cuts.
In anticipation of the agreement with Innovative Interfaces, Inc. (III), Charis Takaro is making her way through meetings with Technical Services units in preparation for the new Integrated Library System (ILS). She is also working with other library units, including Bancroft, to incorporate their needs and looking at the reclamation project for the WorldCat pilot.
4. Spring Recognition Party (S.Wong)
The Library will host a staff appreciation party on Thursday, June 19, 3:30-5:00, in the Morrison Library. Laurie Pangelina and Elise Woods will lead the party planning team, consisting of staff from the Library Human Resources Department and Library Business Services.
5. New Directions Retreat review (T.Leonard)
Library administration reviewed the New Directions Retreat of April 22 and the 165 potential starting points, 25 of which have now been identified as “key” or “quick impact”. All library staff are invited to attend the May 6 Town Hall meeting at the Bancroft Hotel to thank the New Directions Coordinating Committee for their work (now completed) and to launch the “Implementation Phase” of the New Directions process.
Responsibility for each of the 25 selected starting points has been assigned to an AUL/director who will take the lead in developing an implementation plan. These will be presented as a handout and discussed in more detail at the May 6 Town Hall meeting.
6. Surge back to Doe Annex (B.Krell)
Bid proposals from movers were due April 29, and vendor interviews will be conducted mid-May, after which the winning bid will be announced. The new Doe Annex and Bancroft office configurations have been determined, and the Steelcase furniture is expected to be installed mid-May through late June. If commissioning of the building goes smoothly (i.e., completion of an extensive punch list, plus the successful testing of air, humidity, and security controls), the move can begin on July 7.
The tentative schedule is to move the University Librarian’s Office first and switch their telephone services on July 7. Bancroft’s flat files will begin moving on July 7. All Bancroft staff at 2121 Allston should be ready to move their offices by July 18, and their telephone services will be switched on July 21. The Allston Way staff offices will be moved in the following order: Administration, curators, BTS second floor, BTS first floor, BPS. It is expected that CTP and MTP will move late July or early August.
It is likely that ROHO and LSO staff will move from Evans Hall to Doe Annex in October, although exact dates for their moves have not been set.
The Cabinet meeting was adjourned at 10:00 AM.
