1. Announcements

Tom Leonard announced that Paul Gray will be stepping down from his post as
Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, effective July 1, 2006. He will
return to teaching and research. At the morning's Roundtable meeting, Tom
circulated a card for library managers to sign, thanking Paul for
supporting the library over the years and wishing him well.

2. EAL surge report --Peter Zhou

The target date for the opening of the Starr East Asian Library is October
2007. A surge task force has been formed to plan and advise upon this
challenging move. Jean Han and Bruce Williams will co-chair the task force,
whose members include: Tomoko Kobayashi, Evelyn Kuo, Yifeng Wu, and Susan
Xue. Advisors to the task force are: Gillian Boal (Preservation), Randal
Brandt (Bancroft), Fred Yasaki (Library Space Planning), Scott Miller
(NRLF), and Randy Wilson (Bioscience).

Nearly 400,000 volumes from four locations must be integrated in the Starr
Library. The new facility will provide capacity for 7 years' growth, after
which compact shelving can be added to provide growth capacity for another
13 years.

Many new services are envisioned to be in place for the opening on day one
according to the building design: a multi-media center; a large periodicals
reading room; a staffed reference desk for information and research
assistance; extended evening and weekend hours; a user education program; a
rare book conservation and service program; and new security provisions.

Over time, three additional task forces will be formed to develop service
plans for Public Services, Technical Services, and Administrative support
for the Starr Library. During the fall of 2005, campus and Library Space
Planning will estimate the EAL moving costs, and the surge-related budgets
will be forwarded to ADMIN by February 2006.

3. Planning for Duane Webster's visit --Tom Leonard

Duane Webster, Executive Director of the Association of Research Libraries,
will visit Berkeley on November 7. Duane forwarded a list of possible
topics for discussion at that time. ARL's agenda includes a focus on
scholarly communication and exploring new ways of describing and measuring
collections. As director of ARL, Duane is well connected both nationally
and internationally and could provide his perspective on the mood on
Capitol Hill and Washington policy in general. He might report also on
emerging workforce patterns and how the field is changing. We could share
information regarding our special collections initiatives, provide a tour
of our libraries, and invite him to attend the Dinner in The Library on
November 6. An itinerary will be developed further when we know how much
time is available for his visit.

4. Major Issues in 2005-06 --Tom Leonard

At their meeting on September 21, the University Librarians reviewed a list
of major issues for 2005-06, as a planning tool for developing their future
agendas. The ULs were asked to consult with their campus colleagues and
prioritize the list. Cabinet members were instructed to review the items
and email Tom their suggestions for order of priority. It was noted that
groups other than the ULs might be working on resolving some of the high
priority issues as well.

5. 10 Millionth Volume --Dave Duer

Dave Duer provided a current list of the featured Ten of the Ten Million,
recent and representative additions to the library's collections, with a
brief story for each of the ten items. These volumes will be highlighted at
the annual donor event, the Library Associates Dinner in The Library, on
November 6. In addition, the Library Development Office will include
publicity about Berkeley's 10 Millionth Volume in the mailing to alumni
this fall. Cabinet suggested that the value and merit of these particular
items to the Library's collection also might be of interest.
