1. Announcement
Elizabeth Byrne announced that after many months Canon has adjusted the
copiers at the Environmental Design Library to charge extra for the larger
size paper.
2. Lunch Poems (D.Duer)
The current coordinator for the Lunch Poems program is Zack Rogow, who will
be leaving campus this summer. Library donor Rocky Main has provided
funding for this popular program and her support will continue for 2005-06.
Professor Robert Hass, who launched the program and has been its advocate
over the years, wants to continue the series. The program framework is in
place, the series attracts a wide audience, and it is good public relations
for the Library.
Isabel Stirling recommended that the Library consider continuing the series
as long as Professor Hass is at Berkeley and available to participate. Dave
Duer noted that it takes a lot of work and someone will be needed to
coordinate the program. Tom Leonard suggested that it might be appropriate
for the Library Development communication position. In the interim, Isabel
is willing to serve as liaison and solicit volunteers to help. Cabinet
agreed to continue the Lunch Poems on a year-to-year basis.
3. 10 Millionth Volume Committee Report (D.Duer)
Dave Duer made a recommendation for "the featured 10" items in celebration
of the Library's 10 millionth volume. After much discussion and review of
the list of items for consideration, Cabinet expressed its thanks to the 10
Millionth Volume Committee for its work and selected eleven items. In
addition, Cabinet asked Dave Duer, as chair of the group, to solicit eleven
stories from the committee to accompany the items chosen. The stories will
be limited to 200 words and should contain an image of the item(s). Cabinet
decided that a panel of three should read the stories and select a winner.
October 10 was suggested as a possible date to celebrate the event of the
Library's 10 Millionth Volume.
This topic will return to Cabinet at its next meeting on June 2. Members
were asked to note that the next regularly scheduled meeting (May 26) will
be pushed forward one week to June 2.
4. Aspirational Themes for new Berkeley fund-raising (T.Leonard, D.Duer)
The campus will begin the silent phase of its next big fund-raising efforts
this summer. There will not be a request for favored projects. Rather,
California Hall is looking for possible themes. The idea is to select an
aspirational theme with a story behind it to reflect the donor's
perspective. For example, paramount to the alumni might be the
undergraduate experience or Berkeley's status as the greatest public
university.
Tom Leonard distributed a sample "logo" adapted by Library Graphics using
the open book and floating ribbon from the university seal. Cabinet
suggested several ideas for aspirational themes that included: the
undergraduate experience; research for the 21st century; cultural heritage;
partnerships; languages of the world; multiversity. Tom asked that
additional ideas be sent to him by e-mail. Dave Duer will canvass the
Library Advisory Board for stories to augment these ideas or themes.
Consultation regarding aspirational themes for new Berkeley fund-raising
began with The Chancellor, Deans, and Academic Senate leadership on May 10.
Consultations over the summer will attempt to harmonize themes from the
campus units with the main campus's overall message. Aspirational themes
will be on the agenda for serious discussion at the Chairs and Deans
retreat on August 24.
5. Public Services Security Guidelines (I.Stirling)
Amy Kautzman and Mike Rancer presented the Public Services Security
Guidelines to Admin on May 11. Isabel Stirling reported that the document
will be presented also to Roundtable and some of the councils (especially
the Public Services Council). The security guidelines will be discussed
more fully at the next Cabinet meeting on June 2. Admin recommended an
Early Bird for all staff including the Affiliated Libraries, and that will
be scheduled this summer. (Tentative date is July 21.)
