1. Announcements
Dave Duer circulated the Annual Report of the Library
2003-2004, "Celebrating the Tradition". The annual report acknowledges
library donors and provides summaries of current efforts to improve library
collections and facilities.
The West County Edition of the Contra Costa Times on Sunday, 20 February
2005, featured an article on the Library's hunt for the 10 millionth
volume. The piece also included photographs of the University Library's
East Reading Room, the North Reading Room's renovated tables and lighting
fixtures, and Tony Bliss at the California International Antiquarian Book
Fair in San Francisco.
2. Budget call update ~M.Rancer, B.Hurley
Mike Rancer distributed the Budget Call Letter for 2006, which states, "The
budget outlook for 2005-06 appears more promising." Nonetheless, given the
structural deficit in the state's budget, prudent planning is encouraged.
The Library received $400,000 in one-time funding this fiscal year and is
expected to request that those monies become permanent and recurring for
2005-06 forward. The Library will submit a request for $1 million in
campus matching funds for the Integrated Library System (ILS) to replace
GLADIS. And, request a permanent funding increase in the amount of
$550,000 to cover the cost of collections inflation during 2005-06 and to
prevent a $1.1 million cut in acquisitions during 2006-07.
3. Library Bookstore Task Force ~L.Leighton
Lee Leighton presented a draft charge for a Library Bookstore task force.
The bookstore's current space in 125 Doe will be merged with the Library
Workstation and Network Support (LWNS) unit. The task force will be asked
to explore alternate spaces inside and outside the library to provide
Library Bookstore services and issue its report to Cabinet by 15 April
2005. Cabinet approved the task force charge. Task force membership will be
comprised of Frank Carothers, Professor James Casey, Pat Maughan, Jim
Spohrer, Professor George Starr, and Elise Woods (chair).
4. Library Stars Program update ~I.Stirling
Isabel Stirling gave an update on the Library Stars Program that was
established in July 2002. The program was designed to allow individual
staff members to recognize other individuals in the Library. Since its
inception, five stars have circulated each month, and 60 people have been
recognized each calendar year. Cabinet extended thanks to Wendy Hanson
(Library Development) and Mary Scott (Library Graphics) for their able
management of this popular program. The Library Stars Program now seems to
have run its course, and time has come to seek creative ideas for its
replacement. Isabel will prepare an article for publication in CU News.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:20 PM.
