1. Tour of Hargrove Music Library with John Roberts (1:30-2:30)

John Roberts led Cabinet on a tour of the new Jean Gray Hargrove Music
Library. The interior library space is most impressive for its functional
design as well as its breathtaking views of adjacent campus
landscapes. Cabinet commended John for his perseverance in seeing the
library project to fruition. The new library opened to patrons on July 6,
and a gala opening reception is planned for September 26.

2. Cabinet meeting in the Hargrove Seminar Room (2:30-3:00)

Announcements

Tom Leonard reported that the Library still does not have a budget in
writing. He thanked Susan Wong and Mike Rancer for their efforts in
shepherding the Severance Incentive Program (SIP) proposal through the
Labor Relations process. Responses have been very positive and a final
decision is expected by July 23.

Isabel Stirling thanked Cabinet members for comments sent directly to her
after the June 10 Cabinet discussion regarding the Library Services Models
draft. The revised draft will be reviewed by a small group of senior
managers before presentation to Roundtable on July 22. Roundtable members
will be asked to provide input regarding more long term transitions.

Bernie Hurley reported that he distributed the allocations for storage at
the Northern Regional Library Facility (NRLF) for the next fiscal year,
with details of the storage plan until NRLF Phase 3 opens in 2005.

The Policy on Protected Personal Information, approved by Cabinet, has been
posted to the web at:
http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/AboutLibrary/privacy/UCBLibrary_PersonalData_06252004.pdf
Amy Kautzman will schedule a library presentation on details of the
policy. In the meantime, departments that need clarifications regarding
specifics of the policy should consult with Amy about their unit’s privacy
checklist/audit.

Dave Duer distributed a preliminary end-of-year report on gifts to the
Library, noting that “the encouraging fact is… we are seeing very strong
increased giving for the Library as a whole…” To date, the grand total
stands at $11,985,046 for cash received (not pledges). The Library Fund
(unrestricted gifts), Library Fund (restricted to specific programs), gifts
to the East Asian Library, the Bancroft Centennial Campaign, and
Gifts-in-Kind -- all reflect the highest totals every raised in these
categories.

The Bancroft Library is looking into the possibility of surging into the
space located at 2121 Allston Way, which was formerly occupied by Berkeley
Public Library while its historic building was under
renovation. Negotiations are proceeding in a positive fashion and the
matter may go before the Vice Chancellor’s Administrative Council (VCAC) as
early as July 22.
