1. Announcements

Cabinet convened in 550-C Moffitt Library, the newly appointed room for
instructional services.

Tom Leonard reported that the Library had not received its budget figures
in writing yet.

Bancroft Library has received the Society of American Archivists'
Distinguished Service Award. The awards ceremony for this-- the Society's
very highest honor given to an institution for lifetime achievement-- will
be held in early August.

2. Library Publications Working Group Report (I.Abalos)

The Library Publications Working Group was formed in July 2003 and charged
to review and refine library publications. Working group members
were: Imani Abalos (chair), Cathy Dinnean, Elizabeth Dupuis, Aija
Kanbergs, Margaret Phillips, and Beth Weil. Imani Abalos presented to
Cabinet the Library Publications Working Group Report and Recommendations,
prepared March 2004, with a focus upon the process, design, specific
guides, and support for local publications. The group's recommendations
attempt to codify current practices that work well, while suggesting
improvements to others and valuing certain local products.

Cabinet approved the report and thanked the task force for its
work. Next, Patty Iannuzzi and Isabel Stirling will review carefully the
recommendations and considerations for implementation.

3. Briefing new Chancellor on Library handout (T.Leonard)

Tom Leonard shared with Cabinet the briefing paper on the University
Library, which was prepared for inclusion in a briefing book to be
presented to the new chancellor upon his arrival at Berkeley. An
announcement regarding the appointment of a new chancellor is not expected
until July.

4. Library Service Model draft for discussion

Using the many good ideas and suggestions from earlier discussions, a draft
document was prepared to facilitate this Cabinet discussion of new service
models for the coming years. While the document is more vision statement
than budgeting plan, it can serve as a means to move forward with
management of the Library's budget situation. The goal will be to build
upon the Library's strengths and make the connections to develop a model of
sustainable service for the future.

Cabinet accepted this document. Cabinet members will email additional
comments directly to Isabel Stirling, and the discussion of user-centered
library service for the future will move to Roundtable in July.

5. 2007 PNC/PRDLA conference proposal (P.Zhou)

To celebrate the grand opening of the Chang-Lin Tien Center for East Asian
Studies/C.V. Starr East Asian Library, the UC Berkeley Library proposes to
host the joint international conference of the Pacific Neighborhood
Consortium (PNC) and the Pacific Rim Digital Libraries Alliance (PRDLA) in
October 2007. It is envisioned that this campus event would be co-sponsored
by PNC, PRDLA, the University Library, the Chancellor's Office, University
Relations, and International and Area Studies. These organizations tend to
schedule their conferences two years in advance. Given the amount of time
needed to organize and publicize such an international conference, it is
necessary to begin planning now. Groundbreaking for the Starr Library is
scheduled for July 2005, with the opening in Summer 2007.

Cabinet approved the proposal and suggested that the time frame be extended
to October 2007-May 2008, to allow for possible delays in construction of
the Starr Library that would affect its opening date.

6. Shared Collections (P.Iannuzzi)

Patty Iannuzzi distributed to Cabinet the April 22 draft of the document
"Building Shared Collections-The Berkeley Perspective". The document was
reviewed by library selectors and Collections Council and will be presented
to the Subject Councils. It was noted that there is a need for a
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) among the campuses and that the
governance model should be included in the MOU. The topic will be placed
next on the agenda for discussion by university librarians systemwide.
