1. Announcements

Cal Day is April 17 this year. The Library will provide library tours and
events in Bancroft Library instead of setting up a table at Sproul Plaza.
Look for the events schedule on the Cal Day website
at: http://www.berkeley.edu/calday/

Mike Rancer circulated the architect’s design for construction of a canopy
over the FSM Café terrace with an expanded seating area outside. The simple
overhead covering will include lights and heating for the café’s outside
seating area. Construction is expected to take place this summer.

Patty Iannuzzi reported that Doe Library’s North Reading Room will be
closed June-December 2004 for historic restoration. Private funding
supports this project. The second floor Reference Center will remain open
as usual.

European buyout specialists Cinven and Candover have purchased Kluwer
Academic Publishers and BertelsmannSpringer. The former head of Elsevier
will head the new merged Kluwer/Springer, which will be “the second largest
professional publisher in the fields of science, technology and medicine
(STM) worldwide.” The UC libraries will be involved soon in negotiating for
subscriptions to STM journals published by Kluwer/Springer.

The Association of American University Presses (AAUP) received a four year
grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to study university presses and
the system of scholarly communications. For regular updates on this project

2. Review of morning’s Roundtable meeting / Feb 23 Early Bird (T.Leonard)

Tom Leonard commended Susan Wong and the campus OHR team, Vicki Oppenheim
and Valerie Ventre-Hutton, for their presentation on the layoff process at
the morning’s Roundtable meeting. It was noted that staff can find answers
to their questions on the web and in consultation with their unit heads, as
departments begin to engage in communications concerning impacts of the
budget cuts. Minutes of the Roundtable meeting will be a source of
information and contain links to campus information on the layoff process.
Campus HR provides detailed information for staff and departments on the
web at: http://hrweb.berkeley.edu/layoff/contents.htm#toc

The Early Bird presentation for all library staff on February 23 will
include a short presentation by Tom Leonard putting the budget issues in
context, followed by Susan Wong and campus OHR representatives explaining
the layoff process. Planning around the layoff process is necessary to
ensure that all policies and procedures are followed in the event layoffs
become a reality. It seems clear that Berkeley is ahead of the other UC
campuses in planning for this possibility. The Early Bird format will
provide ample time for extensive Q&A.

Cabinet members were asked to send thoughts and suggestions to Bernie
Hurley on how to structure future Roundtable discussions as the Library
begins to consider new models of service. Patty Iannuzzi and Isabel
Stirling have begun these discussions within their units. Public Services
Council is already dealing with the impacts of cutbacks. Tom Leonard will
be visiting the library councils (and other groups as appropriate) during
the spring semester.

3. Policy and procedures for internal reassignments - amend text (S.Wong)

Susan Wong proposed a revision to the section on internal reassignments in
the Library’s policy and procedures that were developed last year. The
current language is insufficient given that reassignments may be either
involuntary or voluntary. If the reassignment is involuntary, the employee
would retain existing classification and compensation levels. If the
reassignment is voluntary and the employee chooses to accept a different
position, the classification and compensation levels would be appropriate
to the new position. Cabinet approved a revision in the text to clarify
this distinction.

4. Update on Bancroft campaign (D.Duer, C.Faulhaber)

Dave Duer reported that it has been a banner year for the Library’s Annual
Fund with 5,000 gifts and a total of $1.2 million. The Campaign for the
Centennial Renewal of the Bancroft Library has garnered donations or
written pledges of $13.7 million to-date. Charles Faulhaber reported that
Beth McGonagle has joined the Library Development Office staff to provide
full-time administrative support for development programs, and Bill Brown,
as Associate Director of Development and Outreach, will work half-time on
University Library development activities and half-time on the Bancroft
Library Centennial Campaign. Charles hosted Bancroft events in New York
City in January and has plans for another in May.
