1. Announcements

Some library staff commented that, despite the gloomy news regarding the
budget situation, the Admin Early Bird presentations on November 13 were
well coordinated. By December 19, the Library must submit its plan for
another 10% permanent reduction in the operating budget for FY 2004-05. An
Early Bird will be scheduled in January, to share with all library staff
the plans for cutting library operating expenses by $2.4 million and
minimizing layoffs.

AUL Patty Iannuzzi reported that conversations will begin soon among the
Dean for L&S, the Dean in the Undergraduate Division of L&S, the Vice
Provost for Undergraduate Education, and the Library on how to integrate
information literacy into core cores in the undergraduate curriculum. A
grant renewal application was submitted to the Mellon Foundation following
the successful summer institute for faculty. Restructured courses are
underway. A response from Mellon is expected in December.

2. Holiday closure - campus decision regarding January 2 (S.Wong)

As of this Cabinet meeting, no word had been received from campus Office of
Human Resources regarding a closure on Friday, January 2. It was understood
that the matter was being considered by the Vice Chancellor's
Administrative Council (VCAC). Due to staffing shortages in the Library
during intersession when students are on holiday, it is expected that most
libraries will close that date and reopen to the public on Monday, January
4, 2004. If libraries are closed on January 2, staff who wish to work that
date should make arrangements with their unit heads.

[Note: In a subsequent announcement, LHRD reported that "UC Administration
has determined that the campus is open on Friday, 1/2/04, and Friday,
1/2/04, is a work day for all campus employees. On Friday, 1/2/04, Library
employees have the option(s) to work or to use their accrued vacation leave
to take the day off. On that date, the Library will be closed to the
public. Thus, those Library employees who choose to work on Friday, 1/2/04,
will be working on non-public Library services and functions."]

3. Location of the holiday party (M.Rancer, S.Wong)

Some library staff have expressed concern that the North Reading Room as a
location for the holiday party is too large and impersonal and wish to
return to Morrison Library for this year's event. Cabinet discussed the
pros and cons of both venues. Given the popularity of these events, it was
felt that Morrison Library has become too crowded, and it would be
impractical to serve food in the Brown Gallery outside the Morrison. The
North Reading Room provides ample space for the large crowd and the
adjacent Reference Center can be used as well. Cabinet decided to retain
the North Reading Room for this year's holiday party and work on
improvements, perhaps by moving the raffle drawing into the Reference
Center where the acoustics are better.

Lee Leighton reported on estimates from the caterer for providing desserts
and hors d'oeuvres. Cabinet approved.

The holiday party will be on Thursday, December 18, 3:00-5:00, in Doe
Library's North Reading Room.

4. Doe Annex / Bancroft / Great Rooms - plans and campaign (D.Duer)

Dave Duer distributed the "Comparison Report of Gifts to the Library" for
the period July 1-October 31, for the years 1990-91 through 2003-04. The
figures represent cash donations received rather than pledged amounts and
indicate that the number of individual gifts has increased substantially
over time, especially in the current year which shows an increase in the
number of gifts to 2238 from 1665 for the same time period last year.

The Centennial Campaign for the Renewal of The Bancroft Library was
launched in summer 2003. The project will include the renovation of The
Bancroft Library, seismic improvements to the Doe Annex building, and
restoration of the Great Rooms within the historic Doe Library
building. Ira Michael Heyman, former Chancellor, and Watson M. Laetsch,
former Vice Chancellor, are Co-Chairs of the Campaign Leadership Committee.
November reports show that $11.3 million has been raised, which is 56%
toward the total goal of $20 million in private giving that is needed. The
deadline for receiving pledge commitments has been extended to January 2005.

Charles Faulhaber reported that the program committee held its first
meeting and will work with the architect to determine the Bancroft building
design. It is anticipated that the architect will be selected by December
2003.

Cabinet adjourned at 2:30. The next meeting is scheduled for December 11.
