1. Announcements
Chancellor Berdahl has announced that he will step down as chancellor of UC
Berkeley in June 2004. His plans are to take a year's sabbatical then
return to Berkeley to teach. UC will conduct a nationwide search for his
replacement.
Patty Iannuzzi reported the following:
Doe-Moffitt unit heads have developed new procedures for providing
access to the stacks. In the future, responsibility for issuing one day
stack passes will shift from the Privileges Desk to the Reference Desk so
that reference help may first be offered and referrals made to other
collections and libraries as appropriate. Patty referenced existing UCB and
UC policy concerning access to collections:

A change in policy concerning Reference Cards was also announced.
Reference Cards will be limited to one month and will be non-renewable. A
document explaining these new procedures will be shared with units heads at
a future Roundtable meeting. Circulation and Reference are drafting local
procedures and designing a new reference card. The start date for this
switch will be announced to allusers when the units involved are ready.
Effective immediately, and in order to alleviate the noise and
congestion created in the area of the Circulation and Privileges Desks, the
campus Visitors Center tours will be routed around the Gardner Stacks. As
an alternative, groups or individuals may sign up for a Library tour. Doe
and Moffitt Libraries offer tours throughout the year.
The New Media Initiative was one of five new campus academic
initiatives to receive funding. The Library partnered with this initiative
in order to plan for a renovation on the first floor of Moffitt Library to
create expanded media services to serve this new Center for New Media
(CNM). Gary Handman will serve on the Executive Committee for CNM and will
be director of the library services developed in support of this
initiative. The Library and the Center will collaborate on the space
planning for the first floor of Moffitt.
2. Library Diversity Fellowship (T.Leonard)
LAUC-B sent a memo to UL Tom Leonard regarding funding for a Library
Diversity Fellowship and proposed that the Library give consideration to a
Diversity Fellow position "when it can be sustained by the budget". In
June 2002, allocations for a Diversity Librarian were returned to the
general pool of funds for librarywide needs. Cabinet agreed to consider
funding for a Library Diversity Fellow when the budget situation improves
and the Library is again in a hiring mode for permanent positions. In the
meantime, LAUC-B has volunteered to gather information on funding models
for successful programs at other institutions (e.g., North Carolina State
University, Oberlin, Cornell, UC Santa Barbara). In his response to LAUC-B,
Tom will ask them to provide information on various funding models.
Patty Iannuzzi noted that such a fellowship would require a mentor and a
developed program. Since LHRD would be a key partner for such a project,
Cabinet asked Susan Wong to take the lead in coordinating the effort when
funding becomes available.
3. Glossary of Definitions/Internal Reassignment Procedures (S.Wong)
Susan Wong distributed the draft Glossary of Definitions/Internal
Reassignment Procedures for review and input from Cabinet. The draft
document has been under discussion in Admin. Susan will provide further
research to answer the questions raised by Cabinet. Specific issues must
be returned to Admin for clarification before the document can be finalized.
4. Winter Holiday Party 2003 (T.Leonard)
Cabinet selected Thursday, December 18, as the date for this year's Library
holiday party. Cabinet members will again divide the major party planning
responsibilities and call upon library volunteers as needed to assist them.
Assignments were made as follows:
Food Bette Anton & Lee Leighton (with advice from Kathryn Wayne)
Drinks Bernie Hurley
Decorations Susan Wong & Jim Church (with advice from Patty Iannuzzi)
Music, Gifts & Raffle Tickets Dave Duer & Tom Leonard
The meeting was adjourned at 2:30 p.m.
