1. Announcements

The Library is featured prominently in the UC Berkeley General Catalog
2003/2005, on the cover, at the beginning of each chapter, and within The
Chancellor's message that states, "Few things are more important to a
top-rated teaching and research institution than the quality of its
library." Chancellor Berdahl goes on to express his "affection for the
library" and urges students to "make the most of its immense resources"
during their time at Berkeley.

The Chancellor will issue a letter to faculty in early September regarding
the cost of journals and the crisis in scholarly communication. The letter
contains an addendum from UL Leonard and Professors Newcomb and Tennant,
Co-Chairs of the Academic Senate Library Committee, outlining the problem
and offering some options for faculty action. The Library will distribute
a follow-up piece with price comparisons.

AUL Iannuzzi will share The Chancellor's letter regarding journal prices
with Collections Council and later with library selectors. Patty is
working with Gail Ford and Margaret Phillips on ways to enhance the
Collections website to assist library liaisons in responding to faculty
inquiries, and a workshop for library liaisons is under development.

A group has been formed with representatives from Technical Services,
Systems, and Library Business Services to look at e-journals records and
how they are currently recorded and counted in GLADIS.

This fall, library staff who are also artists and photographers will be
invited to display their works in the Morrison Library. Each month two
different artists will be featured, and library staff are encouraged to
view the exhibits. Look for announcements in CU News.

2. Library Stars Program (B.Hurley)

The Library Stars Program has completed its first year. Cabinet expressed
thanks to Org Dev with special thanks to Wendy Hanson and Gail Ford for
their extra efforts in support of the program. Cabinet approved the Library
Stars Program for another year. Isabel Stirling volunteered to represent
Cabinet's sponsorship of the program and work with Wendy and Gail to
coordinate logistics and publicity.

3. Library Holiday Card (T.Leonard, D.Duer)

Dave Duer circulated the 1918 Blue & Gold yearbook containing water color
representations of campus scenes. He also displayed the sets of postcards
distributed throughout the year as "gifts from the Library Associates",
which contained a scene of the faculty glade. Cabinet was asked to consider
these options for the Library's 2003 holiday card and send comments to Dave
regarding their preferences. Dave will consult with Mary Scott in the
Library Graphics Office about reproducing specific water color prints from
the Blue & Gold publication.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:15 p.m.
