An all staff Early Bird is scheduled on Monday, May 12, in the Morrison
Room to kick off the Mellon Library/Faculty Institute on Undergraduate
Research Pilot Project and the upcoming Mellon Faculty Institute to be held
on campus June 2-20.
A reception honoring recipients of the Library Prize for Undergraduate
Research will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 4:00-6:00, in the Morrison Room.
The Library Prize recognizes outstanding research projects produced for
class assignments during the current academic year. Cash prizes of $750 and
$1000 will be awarded.
A reception will be held in the Morrison Room, on Thursday, May 15,
5:00-7:00, celebrating the "Reel Life Stories" exhibit in the Brown
Gallery. The exhibit highlights documentary film and filmmakers and the
documentary collections of the Media Resources Center, Moffitt Library.
The Roundtable agenda for May 22 will include a presentation on
"Information Technology Opportunities and Challenges" by Associate Vice
Chancellor Jack McCredie, and LHRD will provide updates on the START Program.
On May 1, the Campaign Leadership Committee met to review cost estimates
for the Centennial Renewal Campaign for The Bancroft Library. The State of
California will provide $16.9 million for seismic improvements and the
private support required for programmatic renewal of Doe Annex, the Doe
Great Rooms and Core, and a Doe Annex Rooftop Addition is estimated at
$18.8 million.
Tom Leonard reported that the next Council of Deans meeting is scheduled on
May 20, shortly after the State's mid-May budget revision. Tom will report
if any campus budget news is forthcoming at that time.
The LAUC guidelines for Affiliated Libraries are being revised. The last
guidelines were written in 1998.
2. Free Wireless Access Points (P.Iannuzzi, J.Towers)
H-P has granted UC Berkeley 160 wireless access points as part of an
experiment to study the effect of wireless internet access on student
learning and student use of online course materials. Professor Philip Stark
is in charge of the project and has offered 50 free wireless access points
to the Library. The Library would need to pay for the cost of installation
and install access points in secure locations that serve students. The
Library intends to respond with a proposal. Joe Towers from Library
Systems joined Cabinet with some cost estimates for the installations,
noting that costs will vary for locations that already have the necessary
infrastructure in place versus locations that will require additional
cable, fiber, switching equipment, etc.
Joe will work with Isabel Stirling to identify library locations with and
without the necessary infrastructure. Patty Iannuzzi will contact
Professor Stark regarding the timeline for the project. As soon as the firm
site-by-site cost estimates are completed, the topic will return to Cabinet.
3. Discuss morning's all staff Early Bird
The Early Bird program included updates on the status of the budget, the
budget planning process, and Themes for Guiding the Library. It served as
an introduction to the Library Staff Sessions to follow in May. Tom Leonard
thanked Cabinet members for their participation, noting that the program
was well-organized and participants were well-prepared. Cabinet shared the
many positive comments and a few dissenting viewpoints that were received
from staff. LHRD will gather additional comments on the Themes as they come
in from staff, either in hardcopy or via the special email account,
themes@library.berkeley.edu
A Reminder: Cabinet has scheduled a brown bag working session on Monday,
May 12, 11:00-12:30, in 303 Doe Library. Katherine Mitchell will attend to
assist in planning for the Library Staff Sessions in May. Susan Wong and
Bernie Hurley met with members of Org Dev on May 5, to elicit their
feedback on the issues of fairness and flexibility, which will be helpful
in planning the staff sessions.
Library Staff Sessions will be in the Social Welfare Library, 227 Haviland
Hall as follows:
Thursday, May 15, 1:30-3:30
Friday, May 16, 9:00-11:00
Thursday, May 22, 1:30-3:30
Wednesday, May 28, 1:30-3:30
