1. Announcement

Tom Leonard reported that the Public Health Library was flooded early in
the day and would be closed for awhile. In his email to library
administration, Barclay Ogden noted that, if all went well, more than 2,000
wet volumes would be freeze-dried, rehydrated, sorted for repair, and
returned to the Public Health Library shelves within two months. Kudos all
around to staff in Public Health, campus and library facilities for their
fast action, and to Preservation staff for their disaster response and
collections salvage services.

[Note: The Public Health Library reopened at noon on Monday, April 14.]

2. Academic Freedom statement (Tom Leonard)

Tom Leonard reported that the Academic Senate Library Committee had been
asked to comment on a proposed revision of UC's statement on Academic
Freedom. Professor John McNulty of Boalt Law drafted the committee's
response, which was distributed to Cabinet along with the proposed
revision. Tom asked for comments by email.

3. Debrief morning's Roundtable session (Katherine Mitchell)

Cabinet discussed the morning's Roundtable session on Themes for Guiding
the Library, noting that there was lots of interaction, deep conversations,
and participants were very engaged. As a result of Roundtable's input,
Cabinet revised two themes. Theme #5 was edited to state, " The Library
expects all library employees to demonstrate flexibility in their job and
the Library will nurture an organizational culture and provide incentives
that encourage and support this value." Theme #7 was edited to state, "The
Library identifies and protects the depth and quality of its unique
collections and expertise, which are of vital importance to the mission of
the nation's premier research university."

[Note: As a result of Roundtable input at the April 24th session, Theme #4
was revised, and the word unique was changed to distinctive in Theme #7.]

Roundtable members have the opportunity to respond to a Zoomerang survey
rating the usefulness of the morning's activities and providing additional
comments on any of the themes discussed.

Next steps:
April 24 - Roundtable discussion of Themes in Correlation to Library
Functions and Services
May 8 - Early Bird for all library staff
May 15, 16, 22, 28 - Staff sessions in the Social Welfare Library
(Encourage staff to attend one.)
