Dave Duer announced that the February ending reports show that both the
number of donors and the amount of unrestricted gifts have increased over
last year. Also, campus development has recorded a single unrestricted
donation to the Library in the amount of $350,000, which will be reflected
in the Library's March report.

2. Admin and Cabinet roles --Tom Leonard

As we move through the various stages of budget reduction planning, it's
important to clarify the distinct roles of the library's two senior
management bodies: Admin as the senior administrative body and Cabinet as
the senior policy-making body. Cabinet is involved in articulating library
policy and priorities rather than operational management of the library.
Admin orders priorities and takes the actions necessary to implement the
library's policies within the guidelines established by Cabinet. Both are
advisory to the University Librarian.

Cabinet
Membership: The University Librarian, AUL and Director for Collections/AUL
and Director for Doe-Moffitt, AUL and Director for Public Services, AUL and
Director for Technical Services, Director of Library Technologies, Director
of Library Human Resources, Chief Financial Officer, Director of Bancroft
Library, Director of East Asian Library, Director of Development, Chair of
the Sciences Council, Chair of the Social Sciences Council, and Chair of
the Arts and Humanities Council.

Function: Makes policy decisions for the Library. Examines issues, weighs
competing interests, and advises on library priorities. Historical role in
drawing up annual budgetary priorities for the Library. Establishes
guidelines to inform Admin's operational decisions.

Admin
Membership: The University Librarian, AUL and Director for Collections/AUL
and Director for Doe-Moffitt, AUL and Director for Public Services, AUL and
Director for Technical Services, Director of Library Technologies, Director
of Library Human Resources, and the Chief Financial Officer.
Admin Plus also includes the Directors of Bancroft and East Asian Libraries.

Function: Makes operational decisions (personnel, financial, etc.) based
upon the policy decisions that come from Cabinet. Implements and
administers the policies and priorities as identified by Cabinet. The two
Library Directors join Admin when their interests are under discussion.

The two changes to this structure in the past year have been the addition
of the Human Resources Director to Admin and the addition of the Director
of Development to Cabinet. No further changes in the membership are planned
and the responsibilities of the groups will remain the same as they have
been in recent years.

3. Major themes from visions of the future --Susan Wong
(continued from last week's meeting)

In previous meetings facilitated by Katherine Mitchell, Cabinet members
shared their visions of the future library, from which some common themes
emerged. Last week, Cabinet began developing language to accurately define
the major themes and the discussion was continued at today's meeting, which
was facilitated by Susan Wong. Cabinet has planned another extended
working session on March 20, at which time Katherine will re-join as
facilitator.

4. Revisions to budget planning timeline --Susan Wong

The following dates and times will be added to Cabinet's budget planning
timeline:
March 20, 12:00-3:30 Brown bag working session in Krouzian.
March 27, 1:30-3:00 Regular session in Krouzian.
