1. Announcements
Tom Leonard reported that the Academic Senate Library Committee issued a
response and commentary on the campus Academic Strategic Plan, notably the
sections relating to criteria for new academic initiatives, extramural
projects, impact of Tidal Wave II, role in the technical revolution, and
core infrastructure for teaching. Tom also noted that Professor Whitney
Davis's new academic initiative proposal is one of five finalists for New
Media.
Alan Ritch, former AUL Collections, and his wife, Margaret Gordon, have
been invited to attend the Library's All Staff Holiday Party on December
19. This year's celebration will be in Doe Library's North Reading Room.
Holiday staff events in the East Asian Library and Bancroft Library are
scheduled for December 18.
Tom Leonard shared with Cabinet copies of his November 27th letter to the
Library Advisory Board, which meets December 6, to discuss fund-raising
goals. The chief priority will be The Centennial Renewal of The Bancroft
Library and establishing a timeline for action.
On January 9, all library staff are invited to attend an Early Bird meeting
regarding the budget outlook for the remainder of this fiscal year and next
fiscal year.
2. Two studies of University Archives (C.Faulhaber)
In Spring 2002, the director of Bancroft Library formed a task force to
review and rethink the University Archives, which reside in The Bancroft
Library. On November 20, the task force issued its report, Rethinking the
University of California Archives: A Proposed Strategic Approach and Phased
Plan, which compares the Berkeley archives with archival programs at other
institutions. Recommendations include creating a UCB/UCOP Strategic
Archive Plan with a timetable, establishing an agreement on the scope of
the archival collection, and expanding the digitization of historical
materials. Director Faulhaber has accepted the task force report and
forwarded it to Chancellor Berdahl.
In late November, President Atkinson announced the formation of a committee
to review University Archives from the perspective of the university's
history. That committee's report is due February 2003.
3. Budget Update (T.Leonard, M.Rancer)
In October, campus budget letters were issued to all units. The Library is
planning for the 4% one-time reduction calculated earlier this year and a
permanent 5% cutback to the operations budget as requested by the January
15 deadline. In addition, it is unlikely that we will be able retain the
$126,000 per year funding level for student employment.
The Library has begun a series of actions to trim expenses, but options are
limited for making further budget cuts. Career employment in the library
is under a hiring freeze. Open positions will remain unfilled until we have
more positive budget news. Collections will begin serials cancellations in
2003, and the Library will request campus funding to avoid a second round
of cancellations in 2004. It is still unclear how the state's budget
deficit will ripple through the system, but it is clear that all campus
units are being asked to plan for large cuts.
4. January 9 Budget Early Bird instead of Roundtable (T.Leonard)
On January 9, Library administration will present an Early Bird on the
budget outlook for this year and next. All library staff are encouraged to
attend this event in the Morrison Library, 101 Doe, from 8:30-10:00, to
discuss planning for the next 18 months.
5. UCOP & ARL (T.Leonard)
University of California Office of the President (UCOP) has expressed
interest in communicating with the Association of Research Libraries (ARL)
regarding ARL membership indexing. Tom Leonard will have an opportunity to
talk more about the issues with Daniel Greenstein, director of the
California Digital Library, when the ULs meet at Berkeley on December 12-13.
6. Posters for 245 Doe conference room (D.Duer)
Posters of images in The Bancroft Library collection will be available for
purchase online. Bancroft has offered to provide sample posters that can be
framed and displayed in the 245 Doe conference room with additional
information on how to make purchases online. Development will provide
funding for the framing. Cabinet approved.
