1. Announcements
Earlier in November, Tom Leonard announced that the recent search for AUL
Collections was unsuccessful and the Library will not be making an
appointment for AUL Collections at this time. Patricia Iannuzzi and Isabel
Stirling have agreed to continue sharing interim responsibility for AUL
Collections duties, in addition to their respective responsibilities as AUL
Doe-Moffitt and AUL Public Services, and ADMIN is consulting on how best to
reorganize top management for the months ahead. The AUL Collections Search
Committee will be reconvened to review other options.
The systemwide meetings of the University Librarians and Systemwide
Operations and Planning Group (SOPAG) will be hosted by the UC Berkeley
Library on December 12-13.
Dave Duer reported that the Brown Gallery now contains over 40 early
photographs of the university reprinted from originals in the University of
California Archives in The Bancroft Library. These photos show how the
Berkeley campus grew on its present site from 1872 to the 1940s.
Authors Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman are the featured speakers at the
Library Associates Dinner on December 6, in the Morrison Library.
Every decade, UC Berkeley undergoes accreditation by the Western
Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Patricia Iannuzzi reported that
the WASC team visited the Library as part of the preparatory review during
the site visit in October. One of the major themes focuses on information
literacy.
Peter Zhou reminded Cabinet about the Overseas Chinese exhibit reception on
November 21, 3:00-5:00 pm in the Morrison Library. The exhibit in the Brown
Gallery was put together by the collective efforts of the South/Southeast
Asia Library, Bancroft Library, Ethnic Studies Library, East Asian Library,
and the Center for Chinese Studies.
2. Collections / Serials Cuts (P.Iannuzzi)
Important decisions were made at the Collections Council meeting on
November 19, regarding the shift of access from reliance on print to
reliance on electronic only. The first phase will involve all Elsevier
titles. As the Elsevier project to cancel local print subscriptions begins
in January-February, Subject Councils will be asked to review requests for
exceptions and forward recommendations to Collections Council. Selectors
are urged to communicate with their faculty about the serials cancellations
and the shared print archive. All savings from subscription cancellations
will be centralized by moving money from individual accounts.
3. Tier Nine newspapers (P.Iannuzzi)
Since Bancroft Library will need the space on Tier Nine where newspapers
are now stored, a decision will be made about where to store newspapers
that are available on microfilm. A thorough review of newspaper titles is
currently underway, including estimated costs of microfilm backfiles and
microfilm subscriptions. Some of the Tier Nine newspapers are being filmed
in-house, some film is being purchased commercially, and for others we may
not acquire film. Patty will explore options at the Marchant building and
the Council on Library and Information Resources.
4. Update on building and fund-raising campaign (C.Faulhaber, D.Duer)
With the passage of Proposition 47, the Doe Annex renovation project is
moving forward. Capital Projects will make funding available immediately
for the contract with architect Mark Cavagnero to begin planning for shear
walls in Bancroft and a more elegant seismic design. Infrastructure
priorities will include climate control, electrical, and security. After
Fred Yasaki's PNM report is ready, Cabinet must approve a PNM relocation
plan before deciding what will come back into Doe Annex after the
renovation. Bancroft will surge into the Hearst Field Annex (HFA) building.
No decisions have been made yet about when or if the Library computer must
be moved.
Tom Leonard, Charles Faulhaber, Peter Hanff and Dave Duer met with Scott
Biddy, the Associate Vice Chancellor for University Relations, to identify
critical donors for this gift. On December 6, Tom Leonard and Dave Duer
will make a presentation to the Library Associates. The Library will
prioritize the program enhancements and naming opportunities in Bancroft to
promote to donors.
Meeting was adjourned at 2:30 p.m.
