1. Announcements
Susan Wong reported that 110 library staff attended the HR Early Bird on
November 7, in the Morrison Library. Campus HR representatives were on hand
to explain changes in the medical plans, note increased costs, and
highlight actions that employees need to take during this year's Benefits
Open Enrollment period. Another session of this program will be presented
in the afternoon on November 13. In addition, the campus is sponsoring a
Benefits Open Enrollment Fair on November 18 at the International House.
Benefits Open Enrollment information can be found on the web at:

Susan Wong, representing the Library, and Steve Lustig, representing
University Health Services, will be presenters on a "Best Practices for
Motivating and Recognizing Employees Panel" sponsored by the campus Office
of Human Resources on November 14. Susan will be reporting on the
Library's Star Program as well as the five Library Initiatives and
practices acknowledged in a campus "Workplace Success" Department
Recognition Ceremony in June 2002.
Patty Iannuzzi reported that Vice Provost Christina Maslach has announced
the Mellon Faculty Institute for Undergraduate Research, scheduled for June
2-20, 2003. Ten UCB faculty members will be selected to participate in the
program, which is designed to help revise courses to include more
undergraduate research and require use of the Library's resources. Pat
Maughan is serving as Project Manager for this Mellon-sponsored program and
making the rounds to get the word out. As a follow-up to Professor
Maslach's announcement to faculty, brochures will be distributed to all
ladder rank faculty, adjunct faculty, and lecturers in December or January.
The topic will be discussed at a future Roundtable meeting.
2. UC shared collections (T.Leonard)
Tom Leonard asked Cabinet to review some perspectives on the topic of UC
shared collections and sought input that might be useful in discussions by
the ULs at their upcoming retreat on November 14-15 in San Diego. There
appeared to be consensus of opinion on the concept of a "Shared Print
Archive" -- both prospective and retrospective -- but the notion of
"University Bibliographers" continues to be troublesome. Questions remain
about funding issues, how to create an infrastructure, and how best to
leverage the existing relationships to increase efficiencies. It was
suggested that the ULs delegate to CDC and SOPAG task force groups and
charge them to evaluate the issues and make recommendations for
implementation.
3. Access to CD-ROMS from academic departments (P.Iannuzzi)
Patty Iannuzzi brought forward a request from the German Department to
configure a workstation in their unit to access the Library's databases.
Although it may be feasible to install a dedicated computer, doing so could
pose maintenance issues for the Library's Systems Office, which they are
not prepared to handle. In addition, it raises the question of access from
other academic departments. Library Systems cannot provide workstation
support to affiliates, except those who use GLADIS. It was decided that
Patty will discuss the issues with the chair of the German Department.
4. Non-UC faculty loans (P.Iannuzzi)
The issue of lengthening loan periods to faculty from other institutions
was brought to Cabinet. Patty noted that three months is the current loan
period for non-UC faculty. Cabinet thought it inadvisable to lengthen the
loan period to one year, equivalent to the loans for UC faculty. Rather,
in determining the reciprocal policy between two institutions, Cabinet
decided to compare the loan periods for faculty at their respective
libraries and use the shorter of the two.
