1. Announcements
David Duer distributed the Comparison Report of Gifts to the Library for
the period 1990-91 to 2002-03, noting that the figures represent actual
receipts rather than pledges. In addition to the Annual Fund
(unrestricted), Annual Funds (restricted), and Major Gifts, the East Asian
Library Building donations are recorded separately. Current year's receipts
through September 30, total $374,426, and one appeal has already gone out
this fall. On December 6, the Library will host the annual dinner for
Library Associates.
Three new brochures have been designed to explain Ways of Giving, To
Honor,Celebrate & Remember, and The Library Associates. Tom Leonard
reported that the new Library Guides use the same format as the new
development brochures -- all creations of the Library's own Graphics
Department.
Tom Leonard announced that the UC Berkeley Foundation Trustees dinner is
scheduled for the evening of October 3, with the meeting on October 4. The
focus of this year's program is undergraduate education.
The Library received a donation of $10,000 to fund the Library History
Display that will soon replace the case and exhibits that currently depict
the construction of the Gardner Stacks beneath Memorial Glade.
LHRD has scheduled two sessions of the Campus Benefits Presentation for
library staff. Susan Wong encouraged all library staff to attend November
7, 8:30-10:30 or November 13, 2:00-4:00 in the Morrison Library. In
addition, campus presents the Benefits Open Enrollment Fair on November 18,
10-:00-3:00 at the International House. A preview of Benefits Open
Enrollment is posted at:
http://hrweb.berkeley.edu/benefits/oeoverview.htm
The opening reception for the Reference Center on the second floor of Doe
Library will be October 9, 4:00-6:00 pm. Over a thousand invitations were
issued to faculty and all library staff have been invited to attend.
2. Workstations for UC History Digital Archives (UCHDA) --A.Bliss
The UC History Digital Archives (UCHDA) has submitted a proposal for
expansion of office space on Tier 1 in the Bancroft Library. The immediate
need is for an additional three workstations to be shoehorned into the
existing space until Summer 2004. These new workstations are to be carved
out of what is currently a hallway. UCHDA is slated to occupy Tier 1 space
until Summer 2004, at which time the space must be vacated for seismic
retrofitting.
The Library has previously denied requests for additional space in the Doe
Annex/Bancroft areas based upon library programmatic needs and assessments
made by the Annex Space Planning (ASP) committee. Tony Bliss will notify
Sally Thomas, associate director of UCHDA, that it will be necessary to
sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding the Bancroft space. Tom
Leonard will work with Fred Yasaki and the ASP committee to prepare the MOU
between The Library and the UCHDA project.
3. Update on Search for AUL Collections --T.Leonard
Tom Leonard reported that two of the five candidates interviewed had
withdrawn from the search. The three finalists are Ellen Broidy, Gay
Dannelly and Jeffrey Garrett. The screening committee has checked
references, and the university librarian will confer with senior managers
asking them to compare strengths that each candidate might bring to the
position of AUL Collections. The screening committee has also been asked to
present its report to the university librarian in a format comparing each
candidate's strengths and weaknesses. A Cabinet discussion followed.
4. Winter Holiday Celebration --S.Wong
Susan Wong reported that in a meeting with the Org Dev Committee, the topic
of the Winter Holiday Celebration was brought up for discussion and the
history of the event's planning and organizing was outlined. In past years,
the responsibility has been passed from department to department, then to
Org Dev and to the Staff Development Committee. Since there is no
official, formal process for planning the library's annual winter holiday
party, Cabinet suggested that perhaps Roundtable members might volunteer to
plan this year's celebration.
As the Cabinet session ended, Patty Iannuzzi, Bernie Hurley, Lee Leighton,
Isabel Stirling, and Kathryn Wayne volunteered to be this year's party
planners. Isabel and Kathryn will co-chair the Party Planning Committee and
at the next Roundtable meeting on October 10, they will call for a few more
volunteers from Roundtable to complete the party planning group.
The Library's Winter Holiday Celebration will be on Thursday, December 19, 2002.
