Tom Leonard has just returned from the Pacific Neighborhood Consortium
(PNC) in Osaka, Japan and will be meeting with Bernie Hurley, Isabel
Stirling and Peter Zhou to discuss the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative
(ECAI) and library connections with PNC. His schedule also includes
meetings with EVCP Paul Gray and the Senate Library Committee on September
27, and the Research Libraries Group Board meeting in Washington, DC on
September 30-October 1.
Dave Duer distributed invitation cards for the Reference Center reception
to be held on October 9, 4:00-6:00 P.M., in the Reference Hall on the
second floor of Doe Library. Invitations are being distributed to UC
Berkeley faculty and library staff are invited to attend. AUL Patricia
Iannuzzi, UL Tom Leonard, and VP Christina Maslach will welcome guests and
offer remarks on the occasion of this grand opening of one of the Library's
three Great Rooms.
Isabel Stirling announced that the Earth Sciences & Map Library will
hold a map and book sale at Pauley Ballroom all day on Saturday, October
5. This event is sponsored by the Earth Sciences & Map Library, the
Library Bookstore, and the Department of Geography. Proceeds from the sale
will benefit the collection of the UC Berkeley Libraries.
Susan Wong reported that California State Bill 1661 regarding family and
medical leave does not apply to UC since we do not participate in the state
disability insurance program.
This year's Open Enrollment Period will be different due to major changes
anticipated in medical plans and employee costs. The Benefits Open
Enrollment Fair is scheduled at the International House on Monday, November

sessions for all library staff in the Morrison Library on Thursday,

2. Mentoring Program for New Circulation Staff --I.Stirling
Isabel Stirling reported to Cabinet that the mentoring program for new
circulation staff has begun informally. The program was created by the
Circulation Services Group as a way to instruct and share information with
new staff checklists and common practices as well as improvements. She
noted that it is not intended to replace supervisor training of circulation
staff, but rather will function as a supplement to the training by
individual supervisors. Cabinet endorsed this grassroots effort and
extended thanks to members of the Mentoring Program Subcommittee: Meredith
Fleming (Moffitt), Brian Light (Education/Psychology, subcommittee chair),
Marianne McDonald (Business & Economics), Peter Soriano (Doe Circulation),
Caralee Witteveen-Lane (Anthropology), and Jutta Wiemhoff (NRLF, outgoing
chair of the Circulation Services Group).
3. AUL Collections Candidates (discussion) --T.Leonard
Tom Leonard reported that the AUL Collections Screening Committee will meet
on Friday, September 27, at which time Allan Urbanic, as chair, will report
to the committee. The decision making process for selection is as
follows: the screening committee has collected comments from immediate
constituencies, including direct reports, CAPA and individuals; references
will be checked; and recommendations will be forwarded to the university
librarian for a decision.
Cabinet then discussed impressions of the candidates in the various
settings from their public presentations to all library staff to their
individual meetings with the Cabinet group.
[Note: On October 7, the AUL Collections Screening Committee reported that
two candidates had withdrawn their applications. The three remaining
candidates are Ellen Broidy, Jeffrey Garrett, and Gay Dannelly. The
committee asked that additional comments be sent to the committee at
collctte@library.berkeley.edu no later than Wednesday, October 9, 12 noon.]
4. Development Planning Study Report --D.Duer
Dave Duer reported that a strategic planning study has been completed by
Jim Looney from Grenzebach Glier & Associates and presentations have been
made to library administration and the Library Planning Board.
Realistically, it will be very difficult to raise money given the shortened
time frame for fundraising. The study found that a potential maximum of
$6-8 million might be raised in 18-24 months. However, with a more
deliberate campaign over 5-6 years, $20-25 million is possible. The Library
must prioritize what might be done programmatically with the funding that
we can anticipate raising. Tom Leonard will consult with the co-chairs of
the Annex Space Planning group about taking on the role of assessing the
programmatic possibilities.
Meeting adjourned at 2:30 P.M.
