1. Announcement

The UC Berkeley home page links to a slide show of the "Bear in Mind"
exhibit that chronicles the grizzly bear in California. The bear exhibit
will be on display at The Bancroft Library from August 26 until November
27. Congratulations go to co-curators Susan Snyder and William Brown.

2. CUE Strike --T.Leonard, S.Wong

Tom Leonard reported that David Moers, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Human
Resources, presented information at the retreat for Deans & Chairs. It is
anticipated that CUE workers will strike for three days, August 26, 27, 28,
and be joined by lecturers for one day, August 28. Nurses and child care
workers are also expected to support the CUE labor action. Campus
established a web site for daily updates on the
strike: http://www.berkeley.edu/news/labor/index.html

At last week's meeting, Cabinet determined that there seemed no significant
need to make changes in established leave policies. Current information
from campus authorities supports that position. Tom Leonard will issue a
statement to all library staff that library policies and practices will
remain unchanged during the planned labor action. In the library, emphasis
will be upon maintaining good relationships among co-workers and developing
contingency plans for library operations to keep service points open during
the strike. It is clear that operational needs will differ for units across
the library system and must be handled on a case-by-case basis. Susan Wong
provided a work force list for Cabinet to assist library managers and
supervisors in developing their operational contingency plans to minimize
disruptions to service. Patty Iannuzzi volunteered to deploy available
Doe-Moffitt staff to units as needed.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:30 PM for Cabinet's interview session with
AUL Collections candidate Ellen Broidy.
