1. Announcements
--Postcard maps of the libraries are now available, thanks to the efforts
of Mary Scott.
--Tom Leonard reported that ARL wants to start collecting statistics on
special collections and asked Cabinet members for their comments on this
issue. M.Rancer, B.Glendenning and I.Stirling will meet to clarify the
methods for collecting library statistics generally this year.
--The Library has received its budget allocation for FY2002-03 from the
campus and Cabinet will approve the final budget in the coming weeks.
--Lee Leighton announced that there will be an Early Bird for library staff
on eScholarship on November 5 in the Morrison Room. Look for more details
regarding this meeting as the date draws near.
--Patty Iannuzzi announced that the new Reference Center opened to patrons
on August 14 and the second floor south entrance scheduled to open August 21.
2. CUE Strike (Susan Wong)
Susan Wong briefed Cabinet on the Coalition of University Employees (CUE)
strike action expected on the UC Berkeley campus during the first three
days of fall classes, August 26-28. On August 14, LHRD issued a communique
on fair labor practices to the non-bargain unit librarians in supervisory
and management positions throughout units in the Doe-Moffitt libraries and
in the subject specialty libraries. Generally, the Library has no plans to
alter established leave policies and no plans to close library units. In
anticipation of employee absences during the period August 26-28, Cabinet
will prepare a contingency plan for keeping all library service points open
during the job action. In addition, the AUL Collections candidate will be
advised of the circumstances and efforts will be made to tape his Early
Bird presentation on August 26, for staff who will be unable to attend the
event in person. More information will be disseminated as it becomes
available.
[Note: On August 21, campus activated a web site to provide up-to-date
information during the labor
action. See: http://www.berkeley.edu/news/labor/index.html ]
3. Career Development Opportunities Program (Susan Wong)
Susan Wong distributed handouts and discussed the campus Career Development
Opportunities Program (CDOP), which is a one-year pilot program for
employee development. Staff may request funding for a variety of learning
opportunities for career enhancement. A campus-wide committee has been
formed to review and approve the requests for funding -- up to the IRS
limits of $5250 per employee. Campus Human Resources Department has
scheduled several information sessions for staff to explain the program and
has established a web site at: http://hrweb.berkeley.edu/learning/cdop.htm
The web site explains the CDOP application procedures and provides
application forms. Staff are encouraged to consult this web site for
current guidelines, as the program will be monitored throughout the year
and changes may occur.
4. Funding for Moffitt Chairs (Patty Iannuzzi)
Patty Iannuzzi presented a request to Cabinet for funding chairs on the 4th
and 5th floors of the Moffitt Library. This was not an anticipated
situation. The old chairs used by Environmental Design on the Moffitt 5th
floor can be used on the lower level of Moffitt, but an additional 300
chairs are needed on the 4th and 5th floors. Kathryn Wayne will arrange to
have Environmental Design's old chairs returned to Moffitt when they
receive new ones in Wurster. The Library Architect can purchase suitable,
durable chairs for Moffitt for approximately $40,000 by August 16, before
the price increases from $135 to $160 each. Cabinet approved this
expenditure, and Mike Rancer will cover the cost using various funding sources.
