1. Announcements

Tom Leonard reported that his next meeting with EVCP Paul Gray is the end
of July. No budget figures are available yet from campus, but he is
hopeful that we will not need to give back the 4% budget reduction as
calculated in the April-May budget exercise.

The Library made an offer to Susan Wong, and we are hopeful that she will
accept the directorship of LHRD. Tom noted that the LHRD staff had been
informed and thanked Cabinet for their comments in the selection
process. [Note: Ms. Wong accepted and joined the Library as director of
LHRD on July 1.]

The AUL Collections Screening Committee met again on June 20, and expects
viable candidates to emerge by the closing date of July 1. While attending
the ALA convention in Atlanta, Tom met with nine people regarding our
opening for AUL Collections.

2. New Specifications for Library Assistant Series --Kay Starkweather

The Library Classification Committee was charged to review Berkeley's
Supplemental Standards for the Library Assistant series, ensure that the
standards are comprehensive and current, and develop a matrix of duties
performed at the various levels. Kay Starkweather distributed information
packets including the new draft specifications that were developed by the
Classification Committee and its various working groups. Kay noted that
all the supplemental standards were revised for each level from Library
Assistant I (entry-level) through Library Assistant V (professional
level). The matrix format is completely new and includes multi-levels for
both factors and functions. Level factors include: supervision received;
assignment and duties; guidelines used or provided; required skills,
knowledge, background; and supervisory responsibility. Level functions
include: selection; cataloging; circulation; reference;
acquisitions/processing/interlibrary services; information systems; and
archival assistance.

It is important to understand that these are standards and not job
descriptions. Campus guidelines have not changed and must be considered in
conjunction with the matrix in order to determine the most appropriate
level based upon the specifics of each job. Classification is based on
responsibilities for functions and level factors.

Cabinet thanked Kay and other members of the committee (Bonnie Bearden,
April Gilbert, Paul Hernandez, Ann Moen, Kathryn Wayne, and Sheila
Wekselbaum) and their sub-groups for the extraordinary effort to produce
such a comprehensive document in record time.

Next steps will begin with a review on June 27 by members of Roundtable,
who will be asked to send their comments to Lee Leighton. Managers and
supervisors will be encouraged to discuss with their staff. An Early Bird
will be presented in August for library staff. Campus and the union will
be notified.

3. Emma Goldman Papers --C.Faulhaber, T.Leonard

The Emma Goldman Papers Project (EGPP) has been supported by National
Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) grants and the UC
Berkeley campus. Professor Leon Litwack serves as the Principal
Investigator for the EGPP grants, and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for
Research will manage the project's financials for the period July 2002 -
June 2003. The EGPP does not have a permanent source of funding.

Earlier this year, Tom Leonard and Charles Fauhaber were invited to meet
with a representative of the NHPRC and Candace Falk, director of the Emma
Goldman Papers, to discuss the possibility of incorporating the Emma
Goldman Papers into the collections of the Bancroft Library. Director Falk
has since presented a summary of the EGPP's space and financial needs
(e.g., supplies, services, salaries) for the period July 2002 - January
2004. Cabinet discussed the prospects of adding the Emma Goldman collection
to the Bancroft Library and the resulting impact to the Library.

Cabinet decided that it is beyond the Library's capacity to incorporate the
Emma Goldman Papers Project, as we cannot provide the space or money needed
to support the project.

4. Research Libraries Group Visit on June 12 --T.Leonard

The Research Libraries Group (RLG) is looking to identify partner
institutions for RLG's Union Catalog on the web project, prior to its
implementation January-June 2003. Berkeley expressed interest in the
project but cannot partner with RLG on this project due to the Melvyl-T
transition scheduled for the same time. On June 12, James Michalko, RLG
director, Judith Bush, project director, and Merrilee Proffitt, who will be
in charge of partner institution relations, visited the Berkeley Library to
demonstrate the union catalog on the web and obtain feedback on issues and
concerns before RLG approaches other institutions.
