1. RLG Use of Berkeley Images in CMI --C.Faulhaber
Last week at Cabinet, it was noted that Bancroft Library has contributed
materials to the Cultural Materials Initiative (CMI), but the UC Berkeley
Library has not yet made a decision to subscribe to the CMI service. The
Library is actively involved in the Research Libraries Group (RLG). The
library is a member of RLG; T.Leonard is a director on the RLG board;
C.Faulhaber is on the CMI content committee; and P.Zhou is on the advisory
committee. Although RLG has a policy of not discounting the service, even
for contributors of materials, and Berkeley selectors have not expressed
interest in subscribing to the service, Bancroft favors providing funds to
support the CMI, as an investment in its potential for the future.
Cabinet discussed the value of providing additional support by subscribing
to this new service and decided that Bancroft will contribute $5000 of the
subscription fee and the Library will contribute an additional $5000 (from
the UL discretionary fund) to cover the $10,000 annual subscription cost
for one year, as an investment and to test this new service. Future
decisions regarding subscription to the CMI will be in consultation with
Collections Council. If the library decides to subscribe for a second year,
the library's portion will come from the collections budget.
C.Faulhaber will take the lead in notifying RLG and obtaining an invoice
for the annual subscription that begins September 2002. In addition, he
will ask for usage statistics and more information on RLG grants to
institutions to pay for digitization costs.
2. Budget: Requests, Committees --M.Rancer
Budget spreadsheets were distributed to Cabinet. Budget requests formerly
processed through the AUL Collections were distributed this year as
follows: subject specialty libraries to I.Stirling, collections to
P.Iannuzzi, and preservations to B.Hurley. F.Yasaki reported that space
planning/facilities projects are 70% completed with 30% expected to be
completed by December/January. Unfinished one-time projects for which
funding has been approved will be carried forward. The budget process will
be to briefly outline and discuss the various budget requests by
AUL/director at this meeting. During the next two weeks, the budget
sub-groups will review requests and prepare funding recommendations for the
various categories.
