ANNOUNCEMENTS
Tom Leonard reported that the Library submitted the 4% budget reduction
exercise to campus. It is not known yet if we will be required to
implement the reduction, but the library has developed plans to do so if
necessary.
The Library Advisory Board meeting on May 17 includes a tour of Bancroft
Library. The theme for library development efforts will be "The
Bancroft/Doe Annex transformation".
The Library Planning Board, chaired by Professor Newcomb, meets on May
20. Tom Leonard and Tony Newcomb will present plans for the Doe core and
emphasize the library's budget needs to campus administration, including
the continuing problem of salary lag for the Library Assistant classifications.
Christina Maslach, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, has charged a
Council of Academic Partners to serve as an advisory body to her and
Provost Gray on ways to encourage and support innovation in teaching and
learning. Patty Iannuzzi, Beth Dupuis, and Gary Handman are members of this
council.
Last year, Cabinet approved funding a 2-year appointment for a diversity
librarian. The UC Berkeley Library will provide library-wide experience in
a culturally diverse environment for a recent graduate from an ALA
accredited library program. Patty Iannuzzi reported that Amy Kautzman will
take the lead in recruitment for this position, since Research, Reference
and Collections will be the home department for the diversity intern.
Lee Leighton announced that Susan Wong, who is a candidate for the position
Director, Library Human Resources, will make a presentation on May 30, at
an Early Bird in the Morrison Room. All library staff are encouraged to
attend. In addition to her meetings with various library groups on May 30,
Ms. Wong will meet with David Moers, Associate Vice Chancellor, Human
Resources, and Patti Owen, Director, Academic Personnel, on May 31.

1. Budget Development FY 2002-03 --M.Rancer
T.Leonard, M.Rancer and staff from Library Human Resources and Library
Business Services will attend a 3-hour campus session on the salary
decentralization policies and procedures. Budget analyst T.Johnson is
categorizing the budget requests from library units in preparation for the
Cabinet discussion on May 23. Allocations for each category are as follows:
New Initiatives - $250,000; Replacement Computer Equipment -
$780,000; Other Equipment - $100,000; Furniture & Facilities -
$250,000. Requests for Facilities & Furniture will be reviewed by F.Yasaki
prior to distribution of the budget packets.
Cabinet discussed whether AULs/directors should rank their unit
requests. It was agreed that priorities should be submitted for each
category and then explained at the Cabinet discussion on May 23, prior to
deliberations by the budget sub-committees. The sub-groups will review
requests for Equipment, Furniture/Facilities, and New Initiatives/S&E/GA
and make recommendations for funding to Cabinet.
T.Leonard reminded Cabinet of the minor capital proposals due June 7, for
projects in the amount of $250,000 or less.
2. Draft Revision of the Org Dev Charge --L.Leighton
L.Leighton presented a draft revision of the Org Dev charge for Cabinet's
review. Substantial changes from the original charge include no Cabinet
representation on the Org Dev sub-committee and staggered 2-year terms for
8 members.
Cabinet gave preliminary approval of the revised charge and will wait to
see if the library hires a new HR director, who can provide additional
input regarding the organizational development process in the
library. Cabinet agreed to review the Org Dev charge again in 90 days.
3. RLG's Cultural Materials Initiative --C.Faulhaber
C.Faulhaber noted that the Library has not subscribed to the Cultural
Materials Initiative (CMI), although the Library is a member of and pays
dues to the Research Libraries Group (RLG). All materials provided from
Berkeley to CMI to-date have been from the Bancroft collections, and the
East Asian Library intends to contribute materials from its
collection. Further discussion of this topic was deferred to the next
meeting when B.Hurley will be present.
