to the MELVYL transition will distributed at the next meeting of the

1. Personnel Changes in Technical Services (A.Barone)
During Armanda Barone's one-year term as Acting Assistant University
Librarian for Technical Services, Rebecca Green has agreed to serve as
Acting Head of the Technical Services Department and Cathy Scheiman will
serve as Acting Head of the Original Cataloging Division.
2. Search for AUL Collections (T.Leonard)
The position announcement for Associate University Librarian and Director,
Collections has been posted on the library web and recruitment has begun
for this important position. The job posting is on the web at:
In addition, T.Leonard has circulated the job announcement to other ULs and
will notify other ARL directors. L.Leighton will ensure that the job is
posted on the ARL website. P.Iannuzzi will forward an electronic version
to the ALA Collections Group.
Cabinet discussed the differences between a search committee, which
actively solicits applications, versus a screening committee, which reviews
applications and selects finalists, and how best to form a committee
constituting appropriately broad representation. Cabinet recommended that
the university librarian chair a screening committee that would include the
following: selector(s) from Collections Council; the LAUC chair; the LHRD
director; a Technical Services representative; a Senate Library Committee
representative; a non-librarian, non-management representative. T.Leonard
will consult with A.Ritch and A.Newcomb respectively regarding
representation from the Collections Council and the Academic Senate Library
Committee. Cabinet also noted that typically the AUL candidate interview
schedules have been constructed to allow ample librarywide input.
3. Doe/Moffitt/Bancroft Key Issues (L.Leighton)
L.Leighton met with representatives of UC Police and the Campus Lock Shop
regarding key controls for Doe, Moffitt, and Bancroft. It was recommended
that all requests for master keys in Doe, Moffitt, and Bancroft must be
approved by the appropriate AUL/Director. Cabinet approved.
Moreover, authorization for access to "sensitive" areas will be
reviewed. Library Systems Office maintains access control for the computer
room. Other sensitive areas within the library include the University
Librarian's Office, the Library Human Resources Department, and areas
within the Bancroft Library. L.Leighton will consult with HR staff
regarding access to LHRD and with P.Hanff regarding access control
procedures for areas within Bancroft Library. Lee will report back to
Cabinet and, if necessary, make further recommendations.
4. Insurance Valuations for Library Collections (M.Rancer)
M.Rancer reported that Office of the President (OP) has convened a
committee chaired by Gary Lawrence to review the way campus libraries have
insured their collections. The committee would like to reduce the
university's insurance premiums, if possible. It was noted that valuations
for library collections are based upon unit values and that buildings are
insured separately from the collections. It has been generally agreed that
library collections are probably over insured, except for the special
collections, valuations for which may need to be adjusted upwards. Since
it is unlikely that an entire collection would be lost, the committee is
now investigating how valuations might be adjusted to insure against a
given catastrophic event. The committee is also consulting with other
institutions and libraries containing special collections that require
separate valuations. The discussion will continue with the East Asian
Library and Bancroft Library where Berkeley's special collections are housed.
Meeting adjourned early at 2:15 p.m.
