A G E N D A
1. SB 1247 UC Appointment: CA Trust for Historic Preservation --T.Leonard
T.Leonard distributed a handout containing a summary of SB 1247, a bill to
establish within the State Library a "California Trust for Historic
Preservation" consisting of seven members, one of which would be the
President of UC. Cabinet members were asked to review the proposed
legislation and report any concerns to Tom no later than January 18.
2. Budget Outlook --T. Leonard
The Council of Deans met on January 15. The budget outlook is optimistic
and it appears that there will be no adjustments to the Library's budget
this year. EVCP Gray confirmed that the Library will receive $400,000 in
permanent funding from The Chancellor. Although Chancellor Berdahl
expressed regrets that the Governor's budget did not include one-time money
in the amount of $600,000 for the Library, EVCP Gray will try to make a
partial compensation in the amount of $180,000.
Professor Newcomb, chair of the Academic Senate Library Committee, will
lead a strategic planning group meeting on January 18, to inform campus
administrators about the drop in librarian staff over time. And, the
Library will move forward with hiring for positions deemed most critical to
library operations, with Technical Services processing still a top priority.
A decision will be made by the end of this month about filling the HR
director position. T.Leonard met last week with the co-chairs of the HR
director search committee. Of the two candidates invited for personal
interviews, Tina Kass has withdrawn and Michael O'Neil is still under
consideration.
3. Task Force on Reserves --P.Iannuzzi
P.Iannuzzi distributed a draft "Charge to the Task Force on Reserves" to
examine "current policies and procedures related to the reserves function
for the Doe and Moffitt collections, as well as those related to electronic
reserves for the whole library, and make recommendations concerning
improvements." Creating a new model for reserves would involve looking at
organizational structures and proposing changes if needed. Cabinet
suggested including on the task force a faculty member and representatives
from a subject specialty library and the circulation services group. When
the draft charge has been finalized, the university librarian will issue a
call for nominations and Cabinet will appoint the members of the task force.
4. Library Award for Undergraduate Research --P.Iannuzzi
P. Iannuzzi proposed that the University Library create a Library Award for
Undergraduate Research. The award would recognize excellence in
undergraduate research projects that incorporate the use of Library
collections and demonstrate information literacy skills on the part of the
researcher. The awards would consider the product of the research, but the
focus would be on the process and the level of sophistication developed by
the undergraduate researcher while engaged in the research project. Cash
prizes would be awarded at a reception hosted by the Library with exhibit
space highlighting the award winning projects.
Cabinet members expressed enthusiasm for the proposal and approved a draft
charge for a task force to develop the criteria and process. They will
send additional suggestions to Patty regarding the processes for submitting
projects for consideration, judging entries, planning events, and publicity.
