ANNOUNCEMENTS

Three one-hour programs on the history of early California, which were
recorded in the Heller Reading Room of The Bancroft Library, will be aired
on KQED Public Radio (88.5 FM), Thursdays, 8:00-9:00 pm, January 10,
January 17, and January 24.

Ceremonial ground breaking for the new Music Library will be on April 13,
2002. It is now anticipated that the new Music Library will be operational
in Summer 2003.

The Library Bookstore will close in June. Beginning Fall 2002, bookstore
sales will be replaced by monthly book sales events in 303 Doe Library,
with quarterly events to generate donor interest. Signs will be posted and
faculty will be notified in advance of the bookstore closure.

Eastern libraries have noticed damaged ink and paper from irradiation of
mail. Our serials check-in unit has not seen any damaged goods yet, but
staff are advised to returned any damaged goods for replacement.

Cabinet's normal meeting location will be adjusted to accommodate Spring
classes in the Krouzian Room from January 24 to May 9, during which time
the Cabinet group will convene each Thursday, 1:30-3:00 p.m. in 303 Doe
Library.

Cabinet discussed briefly some highlights from the Roundtable discussion of
the "Draft Policy for Training, Development, and University Service" at
this morning's meeting.
--Make distinction between job-related training and career development
requirements.
--Librarians required to demonstrate career development as part of their
promotion and advancement.
--Library, campus, and taxpayers alike are better off with better trained,
more competent employees.
--Need guideline for training not prescription (x hours per week/month).
--Clearly define/evaluate ramifications of allowing career development
support versus the unit's priorities/workload.
--Admin will investigate evidence of staff being denied access to training.
--Library will look into renewed exchanges with IS&T's senior management
group.

Reclassification of Library Staff (L.Leighton)

L.Leighton reported that local job specifications for Library Assistants
are neither comprehensive nor up-to-date and recommended convening a small
work group to review the existing job specifications and update them to
include advanced serials work and collection development. A task force
with library-wide representation might look at the old job specs, determine
what can be fixed/changed (not prohibited by bargaining agreement), suggest
a funding plan for implementation by unit/library, review the
reclassification process, and publicize the task force
findings/recommendations. Task force members could be selected by Cabinet
after a call for self-nominations. Cabinet approved these elements for a
preliminary charge.

L.Leighton and T.Leonard will consult on the preparation of a draft charge,
seek input from other UC campuses via UC-wide group reflectors, and bring
back a proposal for Cabinet's consideration.
