ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Fall 2000 Library User Survey of UC Berkeley faculty and graduate
students is now in report form. An all staff Early Bird is being planned
for late January 2002 to present details of the survey responses.
AGENDA
1. Org Dev Membership --Debby Sommer
Gail Ford, Cam Olen and Debby Sommer attended Cabinet to discuss the
composition of the Organizational Development Subcommittee and how best to
fill membership vacancies and continue interaction with Cabinet. It was
noted that as a subcommittee of Cabinet Org Dev, unlike task forces,
resembles library standing committees in its library-wide focus on an
ongoing library function. The original Org Dev group consisted of two
members of the former Organizational Culture Committee (OCC), two members
of Cabinet, and three at-large representatives. Appointments were for a
one-year term with the possibility of renewal for an additional year. C.
Faulhaber, L.Leighton, and P. Zhou have all served as Cabinet
representatives on Org Dev, and turnover in membership has been such that
the subcommittee currently consists of only four members (two former OCC
members and two at-large).
Suggestions for Cabinet's consideration included:
--shorten the time commitment because two-hour weekly Org Dev meetings have
been difficult to accommodate
--develop working groups for separate issues and dissolve the groups when
issues have been resolved
--rotate Cabinet members on Org Dev for better understanding of the
organizational development process and objectives
--use the HR director as functionary between organizational development
issues and the Cabinet group
For now, the subcommittee will continue its work on organizational
development issues and Cabinet will continue to advocate for Org Dev events
and take issues to Roundtable as appropriate. Org Dev initiatives that are
moving forward include the training and release time policy discussion at
Roundtable (Jan 10), the second Job Stress/Satisfaction Survey results
(late Jan), library discussions on civility facilitated by the campus
ombudsperson (Jan-Feb), staff drop-in sessions with AULs (Jan-Feb),
Roundtable self-assessment (Spring 2002), and a mentoring and new employee
orientation program. Additional initiatives are planned for the spring and
summer. Details of Org Dev initiatives can be viewed at:

2. Development Report: The Initiative for the University Library
-- Tom Leonard, D. Duer
D. Duer presented to Cabinet a revised draft for the Library's capital
campaign. "The Initiative for the University Library" lays out the
principal fund-raising opportunities for creating a learning corridor
throughout the Library and highlights plans for The Bancroft Library and
the Doe Annex, the Great Rooms and Library Reference Center, the Visual
Arts Library, and Services to Undergraduates. C. Faulhaber recommended a
phased fund-raising approach to cover project work that is likely to
continue for several years. The Bancroft Library and the Doe Annex
building planning, in particular, must move ahead quickly to develop a
workable project plan that includes an expanded development organization
with staffing in place by early Summer 2002.
The draft initiative estimates find-raising goals for specific components
of the capital campaign as follows:
Bancroft Library, space and programs $75 million
Visual Arts Library $19 million
Great Rooms/Reference Center $ 5 million
Undergraduate-related programs $ 1 million
Feasibility studies from campus and Bancroft's architects are expected in
January, at which time these cost estimates can be adjusted for setting
fund-raising goals and priorities.
3. Draft Policy for Support of Custom URL's --Charles Faulhaber
Cabinet accepted the draft "Policy on Support of Custom URLs for Library
Web Sites" as discussed in the December 6th Cabinet meeting with the caveat
that this is intended as an exception policy and any future requests for
custom URLs must obtain Cabinet's approval.
