ANNOUNCEMENTS
Alan Ritch, AUL for Collections, has announced his decision to retire in
March, 2002. UL Tom Leonard expressed personal thanks to Alan for his wise
counsel and, on behalf of the library, extended thanks for his leadership
and stewardship of the library's collections budget. Alan has been a key
member of the Admin and Cabinet groups and will be missed by all his
colleagues at Berkeley.
The California Digital Library is working with Berkeley faculty to provide
content for the UC Digital Repository. CDL's venture into scholarly
publishing holds promise for transforming serials publications.
AGENDA
1. Custom URL Document --R. Moon, C. Faulhaber
R. Moon presented his draft "Policy on Support of Custom URLs for Library
Web Sites" for Cabinet discussion. The draft suggested that support for a
custom URL might be approved by Library administration in certain
situations where clear benefits exist for independent name recognition for
development and marketing needs to off-campus audiences. It noted that
implementation and maintenance requirements differ from case to case and
must be weighed against the benefits in each case. The draft policy
recommended that a custom URL should be implemented as an alias, rather
than a replacement for the site's regular placement within the Library Web,
and that the custom URL should be discontinued when clear benefits cease to
exist or its maintenance increases. A revised draft policy will be brought
to Cabinet on December 13 for approval.
Cabinet approved The Bancroft Library's request for a custom URL.
2. Rescheduling Dec 13 Roundtable agenda item --T. Leonard
The revised "Policy on Training, Development, and University Service,"
which was discussed and approved by Cabinet on November 29, has been
rescheduled for Roundtable discussion on January 10, 2002.
The December 13 Roundtable meeting has been pre-empted by a presentation by
Michael O'Neil, candidate for the position of Director, Library Human
Resources. All library staff are invited to attend this event 8:30- 9:30
a.m. in the Morrison Library.
3. Plans for Dec 7 Early Bird on hiring freeze and other Library
budget decisions
--T. Leonard
M. Rancer distributed graphs of "Inflation Adjusted Permanent Budgets-
Operations vs. Collections" with accompanying tables, "Cumulative FTE
Percentage Changes from 1989," and "Permanent FTE Snapshots-Librarians
Only" for discussion of their usefulness in the Early Bird presentation to
all staff on Dec 7. These and other charts along with the Library's policy
on filling key positions during the hiring freeze will be provided as
handouts at the Early Bird. Tom will announce the positions that the
Library has decided to fill and those that are on hold pending notification
of the budget targets for FY 2002-03.
4. Development Report: The Initiative for the University Library --T.
Leonard
The Friends of The Bancroft Library have committed funding to pay for a
development officer, and a search committee is being formed to recruit for
a Development Director for The Bancroft Library. A first draft development
report for the Library's fund-raising campaign was presented to Cabinet for
review in preparation for a discussion of the plan at the next Cabinet
meeting on December 13.
