ANNOUNCEMENTS
Interviews for the position of Head, Public Health Library are being
conducted September 20-21 and October 18-19.
Library Systems Office has made an offer for the position of Head, Digital
Publishing Group, and hopes to fill that position soon.
On September 17, P.Zhou attended an East Asian Library Study Center (EALSC)
meeting to discuss the Doe core plan. Faculty was unanimous in their
support for the original McCone Hill Site plan, given the fundraising
realities. It was noted that the EALSC is one of two top campus
priorities, the other being the Health Sciences Initiative (HSI).
T.Leonard reported that fundraising was the major agenda item for the
Council of Deans meeting on September 18. The Chancellor and VC McQuade
(University Relations) have issued a call for fundraising proposals above
$3-5 million. The Library will submit its proposal, not to exceed the 500
word maximum as requested.

1. Replacement of PA System in Moffitt --M.Rancer
The public address system in Moffitt Library was installed 30 years ago and
would cost approximately $10,000 to replace. The PA system is no longer
needed for emergency evacuation purposes, because the fire alarm is used
for emergency evacuation according to code requirements. P.Iannuzzi will
consult with the Doe-Moffitt group regarding current needs for public
address and report back to Admin.
2. Bancroft Archivists --T.Leonard, C.Faulhaber
At earlier meetings, Cabinet discussed the issue of Library Assistants in
Bancroft performing archival duties. LAUC-B Ex Comm and CAPA were asked to
advise on the issue of converting these positions to Librarian status and
procedural aspects. It was noted that the APM requirement for open
recruitment creates the dilemma of incumbents having to apply for their own
positions. It was also noted that there is a difference between
Archivists, who must have MLIS degrees with archival training, and
archivists, staff who perform archival duties. T.Leonard will consult with
campus Academic Personnel Office regarding search waiver precedents for
Librarian positions, and C.Faulhaber will compare the salaries for Library
Assistants to pay scales for archivist positions in the UC system.
The job description for Manuscript Supervisor in Bancroft is being
rewritten as a Librarian position and an open recruitment will be
conducted. This may solve the problem by creating a domino effect of
openings for which current staff may apply, if the job descriptions can be
changed to Librarian status with the approval of CAPA.
3. Off-campus Access to Online Library Collections --B.Hurley
The campus Educational Technology Committee met and felt that online
collections should be controlled through the CalNet ID system. Professor
Stark proposes meshing the Library with the CalNet system as a first step
towards integrating library online collections into the campus learning
management system. The primary concern seem to be the technical skill
necessary to access the library proxy server. B.Hurley will contact
P.Stark to clarify the technical issues and explain that using CalNet ID
will not solve the proxy server difficulties.
T.Leonard will invite P.Stark to attend Cabinet to discuss the broader
developments in educational technology and the e-learning initiatives to be
funded by e-Berkeley next year.
[Note: P.Stark attended the Cabinet meeting on October 4.]
4. Configuration of Doe Annex --C.Faulhaber
Bancroft Library has engaged an architectural consultant to review space
configurations in Doe Annex and update cost studies for the same
configuration including seismic retrofit and the costs for optimal
configuration with programmatic renovations including underground stacks
for Bancroft. Campus funding will cover the seismic renovation
only. Programmatic needs will require a massive fundraising campaign
estimated to be about $40 million. Campus has offered 15,000 sq. ft. of
space in the Marchant building to Bancroft.
Concurrently, the Annex Surge Committee is working on configuration options
for Doe Annex and will make its recommendations to Cabinet. Forty percent
of the Doe Annex building is presently occupied by non-Bancroft units (the
bulk of which is PNM), and the committee must find alternative space for
any units that cannot move back into Doe Annex after the seismic surge. It
was emphasized that the Doe Annex space cannot accommodate faculty offices.
