ANNOUNCEMENTS
The University Librarians last met in June. Their next meeting will be a
video conference on September 26.
The Library has authorization and funding for an additional position in the
Library Human Resources Department for workload mitigation. That new
position will be used for a training coordinator.
The Bancroft Library received a significant gift from Gale Herrick, a
former member of the Council of The Friends of The Bancroft Library, in the
form of about forty volumes of artist’s books and classic fine press books,
including many from the Kelmscott Press. The jewel of the collection is an
exquisite copy of the Hypnerotomachia Polifilii (Venice: Aldus Manutius,
1499), commonly considered to be the chef-d’oeuvre of incunable printing.

1. Campus Budget Outlook --T.Leonard
Vice Chancellor Hyatt (Budget & Finance) presented a budget briefing at the
Council of Deans meeting on September 4. It was noted that the present
budget represents a 5% increase over the previous year, which represented a
17% increase over the prior year. The overall economic outlook for the
state will affect the budget outlook for FY2002, and, if the state economy
weakens, campus may be asked to prepare a budget with cuts of 3%, 5%, or 10%.
The Admin group plus C.Faulhaber and P.Zhou discussed the allocation of
library funds available for some one-time expenditures and some recurring
expenditures beginning FY 2001-02.
These one-time items will be funded: $20,000 for Korean Collections, as a
match to leverage $100,000 over four years from the Korea
Foundation; $35,000 to renew/upgrade one of the Library’s electronic
classrooms; $95,000 to defray expenses of the Mark Twain Papers as a
result of the reduction in NEH funding; $10,000 to outsource a pilot
project for original cataloging of Japanese materials.
Recurring expenses in the amount of $200,000 for a Digital Library Content
Creation Fund for all collections will be funded by both the collections
budget ($100,000) and the operating margin ($100,000).
Recurring expenses in the amount of $200,000 will be funded for Technical
Services across collections. The Backlogs Committee will determine how to
best allocate funding for the technical services positions.
The Library has received no word on its proposal requesting $250,000 for a
minor capital project to renovate the second floor of Doe for reference
services. The Library will look carefully at using development funds for
the reference services project, if campus funds are not forthcoming.
It was noted that of the original $600,000 campus promised to the Library
and later removed from the library’s budget only $185,000 has been restored.
2. HR Director Search --T.Leonard
The Search Committee for the Library Human Resources Director held its
first meeting. Committee co-chairs are Bill Brown and Rebecca Green. The
letter inviting applications has links to the campus job posting, the job
description, and the supplemental form and can be found on the library’s
web at:

The Cabinet meeting was closed with poetry read by Charles Faulhaber, as
presented earlier at the noontime Poetry Reading in the Morrison Library.
Soneto XXIII
by Garcilaso de la Vega (1503-1536)
En tanto que de rosa y Razucena
se muestra la color en vuestro gesto,
y que vuestro mirar ardiente, honesto,
con clara luz la tempestad serena;

Sonnet XXIII
translation by Charles B. Faulhaber
While of rose and lily
the colors glow on your cheek,
and while your ardent and honest gaze
calms the tempest with clear light;
and while your hair, which in the vein
of gold was chosen, with quick flight
about your lovely white neck, erect,
the wind touches, stirs, and disorders:
gather of your happy springtime
the sweet fruit before angry time
covers with snow the beautiful summit.
Icy time shall wither the rose,
everything will swift age change
in order not to change its custom.

Córdoba.
Lejana y sola.
Jaca negra, luna grande,
y aceitunas en mi alforja.
Aunque sepa los caminos
yo nunca llegaré a Córdoba.
Por el llano, por el viento,
jaca negra, luna roja.
La muerte me está mirando
desde las torres de Córdoba.
¡Ay qué camino tan largo!
¡Ay mi jaca valerosa!
¡Ay que la muerte me espera,
antes de llegar a Córdoba.

Song of the Horseman

Cordova.
Distant and lonely.
Black pony, great moon
and olives in my saddlebag.
Although I know the roads
I will never come to Cordova.
Over the plain, over the wind,
black pony, red moon.
Death is watching me
from the towers of Cordova.
Oh how long is the road!
Oh my valiant pony!
Oh for death awaits me
before I come to Cordova.
Cordova.
Distant and lonely.
