ANNOUNCEMENTS
--T.Leonard will send a memo to the chair of the Academic Senate Library
Committee regarding the following topics: BAKER fees, processing backlogs
in campus libraries, partnership with CDL and possible hosting of MELVYL,
plans for Doe Core, seismic work in Doe Annex and effects on Bancroft
Library, the Rausling endowment for Preservation, next steps for improving
access in Moffitt and Gardner stacks, the Berkeley-Stanford cooperative,
and Library web pages.

1. Backlogs Draft Charge --L.Leighton
L.Leighton forwarded to Cabinet a draft charge for the Task Force on
Backlogs, which was discussed at today's meeting. Task force members Lee
Leighton, David de Lorenzo, and Peter Zhou will investigate the various
kinds of backlogs across campus libraries. The task force will be charged
to identify current processing backlogs, including ordering, invoice
processing, and cataloging. Their December 1st report will describe the
existing backlogs and indicate priorities, and an addendum progress report
will be due approximately six months later.
Cabinet approved.
2. National Delegation of Chinese Librarians on August 28 --P.Zhou
On August 28, a national delegation of 90 Chinese librarians will be
visiting UC Berkeley. P.Zhou proposed a series of activities for that
date, including a morning reception in the Morrison Library followed by a
presentation on UC Berkeley's Digital Library and Online Systems, and
library tours. Cabinet recommended small groups of 15 persons for each
tour on Buildings/Design, Conservation/Preservation, Special Collections,
and the Science Libraries. P.Zhou will take the lead in coordinating the
day's activities.
3. Cancelling Roundtable and Cabinet August 23 --T.Leonard
Cabinet voted unanimously to cancel the Roundtable and Cabinet meetings
scheduled for August 23.
4. Charge to Annex Surge Planning Committee --C.Faulhaber, B.Hurley
C.Faulhaber and B.Hurley presented the draft Charge to Doe Annex Surge
Planning Task Force. The task force will provide recommendations to the
university librarian addressing the following events and time line:
2001-02 project planning for seismic retrofit and programmatic improvements
2002-03 preliminary planning for seismic renovation
2003-04 formal planning and architectural drawings (pending approval of
State Construction Bond issue)
2004-05 seismic renovation construction to begin
The task force must plan for the decanting of Doe Annex staff and
collections, including a temporary location for Bancroft Library, establish
time lines for action, and assign responsibility for follow-up.
Cabinet approved the task force charge.
