ANNOUNCEMENTS
T.Leonard reported that the new budget figures were not received earlier in
the week as expected. Tom met with EVCP Paul Gray on Monday, and no
surprises are expected when the final budget numbers come from campus.
M.Rancer is hopeful that this year's budget discrepancies will be corrected
in the August 20th budget reconciliation reports.
T.Leonard has contacted individuals to serve on the search committee for
the LHRD director. Look for a CU News article next week.
The Koerner endowment will provide for the establishment of a
conservatorship for paper media. The Rausing Conservator, named for Hans
Rausling, will be employed in the Library's Preservation Department,
working closely with library staff and the Hearst Museum in a cooperative
relationship.
The UC Berkeley Library will submit a proposal to the California Digital
Library (CDL) for hosting the MELVYL-T system in our data center. The
Library is approaching this as a co-library partnership with the CDL, with
the operations budget being paid for by the CDL. The UC San Diego
Supercomputer Center and the Office of the President's Information
Resources and Communications data center are also expected to submit a
proposal.

1. Library Web Home Page (I.Stirling)
I.Stirling reported that the Library's Web home page has been redesigned
with access to staff information via the STAFF button now located on the
lower right corner of the home page. Isabel thanked everyone who helped in
this effort, with special thanks to Lisa Weber. This is just one part of
the overall Library Web design for enhanced usability.
The Public Service Systems Manager job has been posted as a Principal
Administrative Analyst with a closing date of September 16. Reporting to
the Associate University Librarian and Director, Public Services, this
person will serve as the lead manager for public service systems design,
implementation, education and evaluation. They will coordinate staff
training in the use of Web development tools for Library web pages and
develop and implement evaluation programs that provide continuous feedback
to inform ongoing system design and development. This person will chair
the Public Services Advisory Committee that will advise the manager on
public service system design.
2. Visiting Scholars Update (I.Stirling)
An agreement has been signed by Beth Burnside, Vice Chancellor for
Research, and Thomas Leonard, University Librarian, to provide enhanced
library services for visiting scholars effective fall semester
2001. Visiting scholars who have registered with the Visiting Scholar and
Postdoc Program and paid the $200 fee will receive: graduate student level
borrowing privileges; one-semester loan periods; remote access to
databases; full-text e-resources; free inter-library loan; and access to
fee-based BAKER accounts.
A recommendation was made to grandfather into the new program those
visiting scholars with current Visiting Scholar registration who have paid
the old fee of $100. Cabinet approved.
3. Reloading MELVYL (L.Leighton)
L.Leighton reported that the UC Heads of Technical Services have asked
campuses to confirm the preferred method for reloading MELVYL. Berkeley's
Systems Office and Technical Services agree that a snapshot from GLADIS is
the better way to load records into the new MELVYL. Loading a snapshot
ensures against loss of detailed data in the records and a better merger of
records with the improved loading algorithm. The new MELVYL will display
the fullest record and provide access behind that record for the other
campuses' records containing lesser detail. Cabinet approved.
4. Leave Policy Discussion (L.Leighton)
The leave policy was discussed and approved at the morning meeting of
Roundtable. The leave policy document, "Long-term Professional Development
and Educational Leaves Not Covered by Contracts or Legislation", will go
next to the Organizational Development Subcommittee before posting to the
Library Web.
5. Update on Surge Planning (T.Leonard, B.Hurley, C.Faulhaber)
T.Leonard discussed the library's surge moves with EVCP Gray at their
meeting on August 6. T.Leonard and C.Faulhaber will meet with VC Denton
(Capital Projects) to obtain some ballpark figures for Doe/Bancroft
projects. T.Leonard will meet soon with VP Webster (Academic Planning and
Facilities) regarding the Moffitt classroom spaces, which may have
relevance to our surge planning. The Annex Surge Planning Committee is
working on a draft charge that will be presented to Cabinet on August
16. The NRLF Phase 3 and Music Library projects are on track with
sufficient funding. The East Asian Library and Study Center lacks funding
to proceed with full plans to include a study center. Summer 2002 is the
target date for moving the Environmental Design Library back into Wurster Hall.
6. Budget for MIP Relocation Furnishings (M.Rancer)
M.Rancer requested funding in the amount of $85,000 for 14 workstations to
accommodate upcoming moves within the library. The Humanities & Area
Studies (HAS) units will move from the 3rd floor of Doe to the 4th floor of
Doe (into the old SSEALS location). The Museum Informatics Project (MIP)
will move into the current HAS space. Library Human Resources and Library
Business Services (LHRD/LBS) will move into the current MIP space on the
1st floor of Doe. Eventually, Bancroft and the Regional Oral History
Office (ROHO) will occupy the space vacated by LHRD/LBS. At the end of
this process we can reclaim 10 MIP workstations for use in other places
around the library. Cabinet approved.
