ANNOUNCEMENTS
Local papers (Daily Planet, Daily Cal) have contacted the Library regarding
the possible removal of volume 26, in a series of history books about
United States foreign relations. The Library has received no requests to
remove the volume and does not anticipate receiving any such request. It
was noted that the Library has a policy regarding the withdrawal of library
materials based upon events dating back to 1990 and 1997.
On August 2, T.Leonard met with the Visual Arts Library (VAL) group. They
agreed to keep exploring options to move the project forward, including
developing partnerships to share the Doe core space and to help with
obtaining the necessary funding. One option might be a media initiative
involving our Media Resources Center in the development of a program
similar to Yale's.
A meeting is scheduled for August 3, to discuss the East Asian Library and
Studies Center (EALSC). It was noted that the idea of a free standing East
Asian Library has not been abandoned.
P.Zhou visited Stanford University where the East Asian collection is
moving to the Meyer Library. This move represents major changes and new
service models that are viewed as positive.
P.Iannuzzi announced that effective August 21, the Service Desk will be
known as the Privileges Desk at Doe Library. The name change is underway
now in the various print and web publications.
The Management Skills Assessment Program (MSAP) is back for staff who wish
to enter or expand their role in management. Participants are chosen
through a competitive process. Cost is $800 per person. For more
information visit the MSAP web site at http://MSAP.ucdavis.edu
Admin edited the "Special Leave Policy" that will be circulated to
Roundtable for discussion on August 9.
Pam Daniels, Technical Services, has been granted a one-year leave to work
at the California Digital Library as a bibliographic analyst on the MELVYL
transition project.
Julie Cain, Operations Manager in the Environmental Design Library, has
resigned to take a similar job at Stanford. A request to begin recruitment
for her successor was approved by Admin.
Richard Candida Smith was appointed director of the Regional Oral History
Office (ROHO), effective July 1, 2001.

1. HR Director Selection Committee (T.Leonard)
T. Leonard lead the discussion, which was continued from last week, to
determine the membership of the selection committee for the Library's new
Human Resources director. Since Cabinet recommended broad HR
representation, Tom will email the LHRD staff as a category to solicit
additional volunteers to serve. When the selection committee has been
fully formed and all members have been contacted individually, a roster
will be announced in CU News.
2. Extended Hours (P.Iannuzzi)
P.Iannuzzi distributed copies of the report on the "Extended Hours Pilot
Project Spring 2001", which indicated sufficient library use by
undergraduates to warrant consideration of maintaining extended hours with
circulation services. Funding was requested for GA and security to begin
planning ahead for extending hours in the Fall and Spring semesters when
the library will be open Friday and Saturday evenings until 10:00 p.m.,
with circulation services, microcomputer lab, and access to the Gardner
Stacks. In addition, the plan is to open Moffitt Library at 8:00 a.m.,
with security and without circulation services, comparable to the Doe
Library hours.
Cabinet endorsed the change and approved the plan for extended hours and
the necessary funding.
3. Proposal for Observation Study in Doe (P.Iannuzzi)
P.Iannuzzi presented the Workgroup on Access to Collections report on use
of materials in Gardner Stacks and the results of the Doe Gardner Stacks
Observation Study. The observation study was conducted in C-West Range 6,
E classification, both before and after aisle removal. The study supports
anecdotal evidence and shows fewer people waiting after the aisle
removal. Patty requested permission to remove additional compact shelving
and conduct another observation study to gather more data and move toward
the goal of decreased waiting time and increased browsing time.
Cabinet approved. Plans will proceed for the additional observation study.
